• Apr. 20, 2007 - Update on the Chicken, Garden & Other things.
The chicken is still alive, but seems to have absolutely no use of her left leg. She uses her wings to help balance herself and is standing up more and more. We put her outside today with the other chickens to see what happen, but she wasnt able to defend herself because she was so busy trying to keep her balance, she seems to be able to do the basics: eat, drink & poop standing one leg. I keep hoping her other leg will heal (even if it is crooked as long as there is not pain) enough so she could use it enough to keep her balance. We still havent made a decision as to whether or not we are going to put her down yet...but if she cant defend herself against the others, we may have to....I dont think she would be happy spending most of her life in the house...and probably in a couple of more days we wouldnt be able to keep her in her container, so its either build her own little pen, or put her down. My dd (the owner of the chicken) doesnt seemed to concerned, we have been open with her about the possibilities from the start, BUT she is not very open with her emotions, so I dont know how much this is really bothering her.
Anyway, thats it for now. It is a beautiful 62 degrees today and is supposed to get up to 70. Was going to work a little in my garden but its to muddy, hopefully tomorrow (its supposed to be 76). My spring crop has started coming up in my one square where I had planted spinach, lettuce, beets, radishes & carrots.
I have a glass window over it and a couple of boards on the side that I can rotate, so it can get sun, but the chickens cant get into it. So far it has worked very well.
The children are enjoying the day and taking a "picnic" lunch outside of PB&J sandwhiches, apples and an pieces of Orange Supreme Cake that my oldest daughter (8) made by herself (for the first time) yesterday. It was a box mix, and it came out very well. I said "no" to the frosting, TOO MUCH SUGAR!
Enjoy your day! |
