• Apr. 17, 2007 - Injured Chicken and Missing Hamsters
We have had quite the problems in the animal department last week. Our daughter had gotten a new hamster for her birthday. Our cat had just had kittens, so wasnt paying to much attention for a few weeks, when she went to visit my daughter in her room and discovered dinner waiting in a cage (our cat is a great mouser). We didnt have a secure lid for the hamster cage and of course doing what comes natural our cat grabbed the hamster, we noticed right away and got it back. Same thing happened the next day, only this time it drew a little blood. My daughter had been trying to keep her bedroom door shut, but with two little brothers in the house, it was hard to manage. The next day, her sister went in her room and said "Hammy's gone" we looked around and didnt see it. I was sure the cat had finally gotten its live dinner.
That night her younger brother was playing in her room and said "There's Hammy". Sure enough Hammy was alive and well under the crib, we got her and put her back in her cage.....I found something a little more to secure her cage and havent had a problem since.
Fast forward to Friday night.....my husband was outside when he saw our chickens had gotten out, there were some neighborhood kids chasing our chickens, they ran, but evidently one of the chickens had escaped and the kids chased it into the next yard. There they started throwing things at it and hitting it. My husband saw something was going on an ran over, he yelled at them to stop, but they just looked at him and kept on at it. He finally chased them away, but the damage had already been done. This chicken happened to belong to the same daughter as the hamster. I got a towel and wrapped the chicken in it, put it in a rubbermaid storage bin (w/o the lid) and brought it into the house. Its leg had been broken at the hip, but there seems to be not internal injuries. It started eating a couple of hours later, but didnt drink until the next morning. Its still in the box (yes, its litter has been changed), it eats and drinks and can stand on one leg, but we are not sure if it will ever be able to walk.
I told my husband that I wasnt sure I could handle all the emotional trauma that went along with having pets (knowing that we are also going to have find homes for our kittens soon). The chicken incident has provided a good opportunity for my children to learn to forgive their enemies and to pray for them. We are praying that all things work together for good! |
