• Feb. 23, 2006 - Natural Pet Care Recipes & Remedies

I was wondering if anyone has any natural pet care recipes they like to share...either in the comment or by blogging about it...just leave me a link to your blog or trackback!

We have a kitten that is about 6 months old...we have never taken her to the vet because we didnt have the funds and overall she is pretty healthy.  She is mostly an indoor cat, except for the few times she escaped outside (especially the one time she climbed all the way up to the top of the apple tree...we waited for hours for her to come down and she was meowing and tried to come down, but was stuck so eventually my hubby got the ladder out and rescued her..she never climbed that high again!).

Anyway...she has been scratching herself and is starting to leave sores....I think she does have flea but that is only because I saw one once...it jumped on me...uggh and she might have dry skin as well.  Does anyone treat their pets naturally at home? or should we suck it in and take her to the vet where they will probably recommend toxic treatments. *sigh*.  I would be most grateful for any advice (especially of the natural care sort).   Thanks!  You guys are the best.  ("you guys" I guess I am definitely a Yank, since I didnt say "Y'all"  :)  )

Why can't you use the stuff you use for yourself (if you've gotten that far, that is) .. the mild castile soap? Possibly coconut oil? I fed my cats and dogs yogurt and that made their skins and coats healthy and shiny. As far as fleas, I can't think, off the top of my head ... but garlic is supposed to help. Do you have any garlic pills or would she eat powdered garlic in her food? And diatonimous earth is good for internal pests.

Good luck and if you find anything else out, please post it.

I have read that a strong infusion of rosemary applied topically helps repel fleas. Or, a fabric collar soaked in a carrier oil to which several drops of rosemary essential oil has been added ... don't apply rosemary e.o. directly to kitty's skin, it'll HURT.

I have also been in an herb store that sold natural flea collars--a cotton collar with an e.o. blend ready mixed, said to repel fleas.

Pennyroyal will help in the house, but I've read you should never use it directly on your pet, it'll make her sick.

I've also heard that garlic powder on the food will help.

The best natural flea remedy I've found is mechanical; a flea comb. Get a bowl (or something disposable if you're fussy) and fill it with sudsy water. Comb the cat and dip the comb into the suds to kill the fleas. It takes a bit of practice to get the comb and fleas into the water before they jump!

Pennyroyal is a good flea repellant; when I grew it I made oil and made flea collars for all the animals. Now I just give the dogs several baths a summer to try to keep the fleas down; the cats don't get them as badly. They say you can feed garlic to animals to repel fleas; I don't know if that works but I have fed them brewer's yeast and it seemed to help.

But the old flea comb works best of all. I get a great deal of satisfaction out of watching the nasty little beasts drown. (And I flush the water, just in case any survive)

My mom says, "You guys," Did I mention we have family all over the north.
Oh yes, cat stuff....you have to be careful with herbs and cats, there are many that are poisionus, check online before using any of them.
Now for my two cents...if the cat has already developed a sore spot, use neosporin for it (spelled wrong sorry!) be sure to use a Q-tip and rub in good as they will try to lick it.
If you use flax seed grind some and give the cat a tsp. full when you feed her, I give this to all my animals including cats and it works wonders for the shiny coat, not to mention worms...another story....
You can also add a raw egg to her food and that works like a charm for dry, flaky skin. I was always concerned about the raw part for cats so I cooked the egg before feeding it to her and she gobbled it right up.

Fleas, DO NOT USE HERTZ Flea drops, it killed one of our cats. Do a search for Hertz flea drops killing cats and you would be suprised at how many there are!
Maybe try a flea collar? but be careful, If your a daring soul you could try and dip her! YIKES!

I hope this helps ya'll out!
