• Feb. 22, 2006 - Chickens, again!

Crunch time is coming to get some chickens within the next month,  and I was curious to know what everone's favorite breed is.  If you could include if your breed is good for meat or eggs or both that would be good too!  Thanks!

Isn't he handsome?  Spinninggrandma believe's he is a brown leghorn!  (Yes, I confess, I copied this picture from the front porch!)

You hijacked the rooster!

my preference is orpingtons, we get eggs from a lady near us and she raises buff orpingtons, they are suppose to be great layers, and gentle. Not to mention the cute factor, when she is outside she has a few hens that call to her, and won't quit until she says something back...it's cute!

I DO like the Brown Leghorns ... but I think I like the Barred Rocks the best .. although the Buff Orrpintons are beaufiful! My FAVORITE chicken is one in my yard, laying eggs just for me. I also love black ones (from the poem) but the only ones I have ever had are pretty dirty birds ... not as pretty as I'd hoped ... but I haven't had many of them.

I have to agree. I think Buff Orpingtons are my favorites. They are good layers and gentle. We've had Barred Rocks, White Rocks, Wyandotes, silkies and Bantees. We bought the mixed breed bunch last time cuz I also like surprises.

My favorites of the breeds I've had were Speckled Sussex, a nice, quiet bird, good layer that went broody when I wanted and a decent meat bird. I'm looking at Buff Orpingtons when I get chickens again; waiting to see which way the laws jump with NAIS and others first.
For sheer fun I loved the White Crested Polish!

You can't beat Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds for laying nice big brown eggs. They are also great meat birds. These two have always been my favorite. But you should get a few different birds just for the fun of it also. ^..^
