• Feb. 21, 2006 - Dishwasher Detergent
I ran out of dishwasher detergent last week so I started
experimenting. First I tried just baking soda and then vinegar
for a rinse. Not that great. Next I tried Borax and vinegar
for a rinse (the vinegar was the part I was sure about). Still
not that great. So finally I gave up and went online for some
recipes. The first recipe I came across said to mix some dish
detergent with baking soda, the baking soda elimnates the bubble
problem. Gave it a try, didnt have a bubble problem, but still
wasnt what I wanted.
Finally I came across was 1 part baking soda with 1 part borax and
vinegar for the rinse. I thought that was funny. I added
some orange essential oil and gave it a try and it worked
much better, but still not as good as store bought. I then read
to mix 1 part Cascade (or other powder detergent) with 1 part borax and
1 part baking soda. The combination they say works great and it
is an inexpensive extender to your detergent. So next time I pick
up some I am going give it a try (w/o the essential oil)! Anyone
have any good dishwasher detergent recipe's.

Also, we buy a "natural" dishwashing detergent that's based on grapeseed oil; it's still not perfect, but it's less scary, and you only need a scant tablespoon. Now I'm thinking, maybe I'll try the mixing it thing you found, and that would make it even better ...
Thanks for the ideas, your blog is always so informative!
And you've made me want a grain mill ...
