• May. 15, 2006 - Chicken Fun

Well, I have updated on my chickens in a while so I thought I would do that.  They are about a month old today and have a lot of their feathers.  Their heads are still baby chick like as are their backsides (under the tail feather), but I can see some of the pin feather starting to come through in both places!  They all seem to be health and have already doubled in size at least.  We have moved them from the box in our bedroom, into a plastic car shape (I think is used to be a toddler bed) perimeter up in the attic.  According to the book, they are not quite ready for the coop and I dont really trust the cool May evenings here in SE, PA.

I have been taking them outside on the warmer days and letting them scrounge around.  I did have them in the aforementioned car container until I moved it today, now I will just have to put our German Shepherd in the garage when we want to take them out.  He really drools and whines over them and I wouldnt trust him with my back turned as far as I could throw him. (hes almost 100 pounds).

Hubby has been cleaning up the back yard and moved some wood and their was a nest of carpenter ants.  We let the chickens at them and they loved them!  Started earning their keep already.

I planted some tomatoes and my strawberries are doing well.  My lavendar which I wasnt sure if it still had some life in it when I got it, is showing some green under its grey leaves too!  YEAH.  My miniature blueberry bush has leaves popping out all over the place and I am still waiting for hubby to build me some raised beds, so I can finish my planting.  I would raid his garage and make a couple myself, but from past experience I am sure I would grab the wrong wood, so I am trying to be patient.  I may have to threaten him with that though.

Had a lovely Mother's Day despite all the rain that we have gotten this weekend.  It was very relaxing and my DSL is finally beginning to cooperate with me!  have a good night.

Isn't it amazing how quickly the chickens grow!! Mine are only 2 weeks old and already getting those feathers. They are so funny looking. I think they only looked like baby chicks with only downy feathers for about 4 days! Sounds like you are having some fun. Does your coop have a heat lamp in it? We have ours outside in the coop but have 2 heat lamps to keep them warm. They have all done good so far.
