• May. 4, 2006 - Book Review - Keep Chickens
This past winter I was reading up on anything and everything concerning
health & homesteading. Since I very much wanted to have
chickens I dutifully borrowed through the library "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens "
After reading the first paragraph, I said, "This might be great once
you have chickens, but right now its pretty dry" So I returned it
to the library unfinished. I had seen the book "Keep Chickens: Tending Small Flocks in Cities, Suburbs, and Other Small Spaces"
by Barbara Kilenski (it is published by Storey) on Amazon and read
enough to make me realize this is the type of book I wanted to read
about chickens. I looked through my libraries search engines and
neither of them had it, so I put it off. Well now that I have
some chickens I definitely needed a chicken book. I showed my
husband the copy of "Storey's Guide" and of "Keep Chickens" covers
online and asked him which one I should order (this is someone who was
judging a book by its cover) and he opted for the "Keep Chickens" for
which I was grateful, so I ordered it. It is a great book for
anyone who wants to raise chickens in the city. The author has a
wonderful sense of humor and it is intermingled with urban chicken
wisdom and good advice. She talks about how to choose a chicken,
where to buy them, basic care, what to look for in a coop and
more. She also tells stories about her "ladies" and their are a
few colorful pictures of chickens and coops in the back of the
book. It is a great beginner guide and she goes on to recommend
"Stories Guide" for those who want or need to know about
chickens. I thorough enjoyed the book!

• May. 4, 2006 - I second this review
Storey's Chkn.bk. is good if you want a very thorough, dare I say, a bit dry, read. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but maybe as a reference book.
