• Apr. 28, 2006 - Chicken Update and questions!
Well our eleven chicks are still doing well! They seem happy
scratching about and love it when I actually scatter the feed on the
ground! I have been sticking some sugar ants in their cage as I
find them (unfortunately all to easily) and the more aggressive ones go
for those. They are so funny to watch. I noticed that they
are very sensitive to everything - movement, vibrations & noises.
Here are my questions...
so when are they able to start eating scraps....greens etc?
How do you control the temperature when using a light bulb to heat
their brooder...right now its not a big deal...I figured I can swap the
60 watt for a 40watt but after that?
Well that is about it!

2) Keep the brooder wrapped w/ aluminum foil, blankets.. reaching 90 degrees the first 2 weeks. Then you can wean them down a little at a time: just allow more outside air.
If they are huddled in a mass near the light, they are too chilly.
If they are all on the other side away from the light, in a bunch, they're hot.
If they are walking freely around loosely, they are just right!
Enjoy the babies!!
