Our Desert Homestead

First Tomato of the season

It was exciting to day to pick the first red, juicy tomato right from the vine.  It was kind of small and it was firm.  I ate it on my turkey and cheese sandwich.  I might add, on my whole wheat bread that finally turned out great.  I took pictures and my DH thought I was weird.  I said that everyone else who blogs does that and I wanted to show off my persistance.  Of course, I need him to help me load pictures so I will show them off when he can help me.

I did some weeding today.  Boy, can this place grow a tumbleweed.  If you have never lived near tumbleweeds, they are quite interesting.  First they grow huge and green in about 2 days (maybe a week or two).  They are kind of prickly and have a thick stem but they don't grow deep.  Then, they dry up eventually and blow all over the street.  The first rule when driving:  Don't swerve to miss a tumbleweed!!  They aren't large animals.  They love to blow along the fence line and then it is time to pitchfork them into a big pile and burn 'em up.

Pretty exciting on the homestead today.

I had my first one yesterday too! And you are so right it tastes wonderful on your own whole wheat bread! It is my favorite lunch when I go back to school and all the fellow teachers just look and say...you made that, you grew that?! WOW!
