Friday, August 10, 2007 - Down in the Barn

Yeah, you probably thought I was sleeping for the past 2 days after being up so late, er, early with Caleb the other night eating Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip cookies, right? I can only dream of such things.

Matt and I have decided (actually it was me) that we are all going to be getting up at 6ish in the am. Well, trying to anyway. So, today, I was awakened at 6:30 - well, a couple of times. I actually got up at 7. It wasn't by choice, mind you. Eric came upstairs and informed me that he had gone down to check on the chicks and lo and behold, the entire top stall door fell off. Great. I asked him if he could somehow put something up there, and I could tell by his sleepy and dismayed look that it would be better for all if I just got up and went down to the barn myself.  Then I heard a couple of little boys awake downstairs.  I actually thought it was around 9am, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the clock on the stove that read 7:16. Boy, did I want to go back to sleep!! But, I had work a-calling me.

So, I spent most of the day doing something in the barn. Ok, to be fair (and honest), I did take a pretty hefty nap. I don't usually, and I think I am owed several, since I hardly napped at all when I was pregnant! Hmph. Well, after I woke up, I still spent a bunch of time in the pasture.

I went out with Eric to the other side of the barn to get some good pictures of the work they were doing on the railroad tracks right across the road, and there is little Keci, came right out of the pasture fence, eating grass, proud as could be. That was fine until Chloe, the Momma, decided she wanted to join her, followed by the other 3 does. Um, no. So Eric and I then had the daunting task of not only getting them back in, but also fixing the fence. Well, I decided we were just going to have to take the fence down and move it out so that it was in line with the new fence. After getting a couple of poles down, I had the call I usually get when I just barely get into a task in the barn: "Lucy needs you Mom!!" Up to the house I went, and an hour later, I was back out and Matt, Jocelyn and I got the fence finished. I went back up to Luc, and when I came back down a half-hour later, I noticed that there was only 1 doeling left in the fence.

We had tied the 2 Mommas out by the road to eat the 4ft. weeds, and there were 2 doelings out there with them unchained! YIKES!!! Man, I was *not* happy! Truly. They were 5 feet from our busy road, where cars drive upwards of 50mph!

So, we got a couple more leads, tied a couple of doelings. Jocelyn had grabbed their water bucket to *re*fill after they had just knocked it over. . . and, then, turrential downpour! Seriously. It started in buckets and then moved to bigger buckets! WE were going to leave them out, but as it got worse... and Jocelyn and I were soaked to the bones in a matter of minutes, well, we took them into the pasture. They were probably happy with that, though they were still eating out there when we pulled them in.

After that, and noticing that Chloe had about 5gallons of milk in her, Eric went down with Jocelyn and Matt to milk her. She is not a fun milker. She did pretty good, though, with her nose stuck in a feed bucket. And, Eric is pretty good with her. I had to laugh as I walked down there, seeing my 10 year old son milking a goat. I don't know if I woulda' at 10. It's just life to him. I am so glad!

So, sleeping for the past 2 days? Nope.
I never did get that chicken stall door fixed, though. Right now, there is just a big sheet of OSB covering it. Tomorrow. I'll get it done tomorrow. Lots of work to do.

blessings! -Jacque

About Me

Walking Therein is a blog dedicated to journaling our family times, encouraging Biblical living, presenting what we have learned in 15 years of home schooling, and occasionally sidetracking on news-related stories or politics. We are looking for Yeshua, our Messiah to return soon, and are devoted to the One True God, which you will see reflected on each page. I am a forgiven & restored daughter of the One True God, a happy stay-at-home wife, and home schooling Momma to eight beautiful children. Our home school is Living Learning Moments, meaning we learn as life happens. We live on a 2 1/2 acres little farm in IN, and we love our homestead, raise goats and chickens, and keep our home. We also enjoy managing several websites and writing articles for the glory of God as we train up our children for him.
