RSS FeedLISTS ARE WONDERFUL!!...

I have found a wonderful solution to some of the bad attitudes and things that don't get done - or done well - around our hometead: LISTS.
5dd7 has had a problem with the authority of her older sisters, and is quite persistent in the fact that she does not want to be told what to do - by anyone. How it got this way, well, I could say I don't know, but, it is obviously because we have missed key times to train her properly. That is another story.
One answer I have found for her and for our other children is to make them a list of things they are responsible to do.
I include the following:
- Something that is their responsibilty to do anyway, like pick up their toys or straighten their own drawers.
- Something that will better the home. Clean up a floor or mow the lawn, weed a row in the garden.
- Something for their Dad or me. Hannie is cleaning off my dresser today.
- Something for their siblings. Eric is going to make sure all of the beds are made/straightened up.
I decided to do this, out of a need to get the Littles focused on serving instead of themselves, and also to keep them fromplaying outside all the time - which they would do, if we didn't catch them!
I also wanted the list to be something that they can:
- Serve others through.
- Accomplish things that need to be done anyway.
- Love their parents, family and themselves.
- Have fun through working.
- Be creative. (Hannie is organizing all of my seed packets into a storage container)

I am still at the point of just getting my 3 year old to clean up toys before we get new things out (to keep my sanity) and the struggle of her doing her part but not being able to keep up with the baby destructo! When I told my daughter no she listened. Tristan is a whole new ball game and MAN am I tired!
I am just now starting to teach Alyssa chores. Trying to call them Our Share in the Family or something else besides Chores. Everyone has to pitch in when they are old enough I tell her (my parents were AWESOME but we NEVER had chores and as adults my brothers and I actually suffer because of it). So we are working on silverware from the dishwasher and folding dish towels and wash cloths etc. The hard part is me remembering to ask her because it is so much quicker if I do it myself.
Good idea on the do things for others chores. I will try to remember that when the time comes.

You will know me from HSB as "threelittleladies" - you know, the ugly photo winner.
Anyway, I just thought I'd look at your homestead blog since I have one too. I've been to busy to do much new to it, so if you've read my HSB you've pretty much read my homestead blog. I need to rectify that. I do have a different group of friends on each site, but not as much on my homestead blog.
Anyway, I like how you are working on getting the kids more outward focused. My 2dd7 has that personality too. She always has been one who didn't want to cooperate with cleanup and such. It does take hard work and consistency, but I do see signs of her pulling through. She can be so sweet and helpful sometimes too.

I found your blog from another blog -- can't remember who -- sorry. In our house chores are called "helper jobs". My boys (5 and almost 6) aren't at the point of doing them unless they are reminded. But what struck a cord with me from your post is serving others. That is one of my goals this year is to bring the boys to be thinking and doing for others. Thank you for posting this.
