Wednesday Morning at our Place....

Well, it is still February and I am getting Spring Fever !! I so want to plan out a garden for this year. I am not sure how much I could handle by myself, along with the girls, but I sure would like to try something.
I only need my husband to help me get the ground ready and I think us girls could handle the rest. I do not want to add anything else to his " to-do" list then what he already has.
I am also thinking that I would like to add in some blueberry and blackberry bushes up near our barn. We have some black berry bushes there already and I got quite a few off of it last year. We have someon who lets us come and pick blueberries at their place, but I would love to be able to have my own. Stawberries would also be nice. I wonder if my FIL would want to "revive" his patch this year. We may have to start over with it.
On the veggies garden, I would like some beans, a few different kinds, some peppers, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, and maybe squash. I am going to start checking into this.
I like the "raised garden" idea that I have read about. I think that would be better for us. I am even thinking about putting some things in "garden boxes" sort of like flowers to have closer to the house. Maybe the peppers and tomatoes. I know that I am going to start a herb garden like that for this year.
Well that is what is on my mind this morning. Do you have any advice to share wth me? Leave it here for me to read.
Thanks,
... Pat ...

We're going to try square foot gardening this year. We knew we'd need to do raised beds anyway, and this sounds perfect for us. www.squarefootgardening.com
It's fun to plan. We're hoping to get going in just a few weeks here in GA.

Good Morning! Thanks for visiting my blog. We are always working on something around here-(I answered your questions on my blog). I think your plans sound great. I do love the raised beds for alot of vegetables-it makes it easier to tend. If you plant "crops" like corn it is easier for me to plant in a ground bed. If your soil is right for blueberries you will really enjoy having your own. I have had better luck with spending the extra few dollars and buying potted older plant starts. The ones in a bag seem to have a hard time getting started for me. It is well worth the investment. I also raise my strawberries in a raised bed-it helps keep the wild rabbits away. It may seem like it will take alot of time but you get a routine and it all falls into place. Just be patient when you start out---the first year or two is the hardest-lol-after that it is just what you do. It is worth it! Blessings>faithfarm

I have my SFG boxes made and filled, and I cannot see them! sometimes when the snow melts a bit, I can see the outlines, but I have not seen them in MONTHS!!!
and I have spring fever too. winter is never going to end. I feel like Narnia - "always winter and never Christmas"
Jonash2004 kept a nice photo journal of her SFG last year, and mdonohue in Alaska has very nice pictures of her raised beds, if you need some ideas.

2008-Feb-20 - a little gardening you can do

Hi, I just found your blog, and wanted to share what I did in a similar situation (and this is good timing)...
I saved plastic coffeecans (you could use most anything, like the styrofoam boxes mushrooms come in, or even meat containers (washed)... save them, and as you crack eggs, save the shells (crumble them), as you dump the coffee grounds, pour them onto the shells, and rip up the filter into it too. When your container is close to full, add the same amount of dirt (buy it or find a place to scrape some up. Mix it all up in a bucket, poke holes into the containers (to drain water), and plant the seeds you've been saving from your fresh produce:bell pepper, tomato, dried pintos or other beans, the seeds from those green beens and sugar peas that weren't good enough to go into the stew, even potato eyes...). If you don't have window sills, or enough sunlight coming in, use FLORESCENT lighting 2 feet above. When the ground thaws, transplant the plants. It's cheap, easy, quick, and effective.
Good luck!

It is time to start dreaming about our gardens! I'd love to have a blueberry or blackberry bush. :)
