5 Month old puppy bit by snake !!!!

Posted in Family Life

..........in the middle of storms and tornado watch !!!! Who could ask for anything more exciting? This is what we had going on last night.

We were bringing in our two puppies/dogs (the other is about 14 months old) before the storm hit us and we heard the two outside having a fit over something. We thought it was maybe the wind blowing so hard or something. About 30 minutes after bringing them in, the youngest pup just started crying out for no reason, or so we thought.

We brought him into the den to have a look at him and then we saw "something" had got him on his upper lip at the corner of his mouth. We were not sure what had happen, but it was swelling up. So they first thing I thought of was give benidryl (sp?) like I would for the girls. Well my husbands gets home and has a look and he says,"call the vet". Luckly, we have a good vet that gives his cell phone for after hours problems. He told us what to do for the puppy till the storm moved on throught the area and then at 10:30 pm, we are heading to the Pet Hospital. Once we got there they gave him a shot to stop the reaction and then more medicines and we came home. He is going to be fine, but last night cost us $200 and we still have to take him in to the vet tomorrow afternoon to be checked and given more meds.

My husband and I were just thankful that we had the "extra" sort-of, money to be able to take care of him. Our girls were looking at us last night, like " you are going to get out the storm and take him, right?"

So, that was our night. Oh, we did make it throught the storms with no damage or anything. We were blessed, other area around us were not that blessed.

Well, that is all of the "evening news" for our home. What is going on at yours?

Oh Pat, what a terrible thing to happen to the puppy. I'm glad that he is going to be ok, but sorry that it cost you so much to have him treated. Glad to hear that there was no storm damage too.

Poor little guy! We thought one of our dogs had been bitten once because one side of his face started swelling badly. The emergency vet determined it wasn't from a snake bite, but thought he might have eaten some red ants (and it wouldn't surprise me with this dog!).

Hope your puppy is on the mend soon!

Pat, glad to meet you! Glad the storms were easy on you. Both our dogs have been bitten by copperheads and lived to tell the tale...it's the rattlers I worry about. You have a beautiful blog. Karen
