Help! Carbon Monoxide poisoning? - 09:45, Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Friends,

I need your help to figure something out....... it's a miracle I made it too the computer to type this... really quick...... we have been fighting illness in our home.... nauseau, vomitting, diareah, head aches, etc.  This has been almost a constanst with someone for the past 2 weeks plus.  Last night I was so sick, I almost passed out and sat in the bath all night.......

I slept downstairs by the stove........ because I knew the night would be cold and I needed to stoke the woodstove and make sure it was loaded at all times.... our furnace is not dependable.....

When I went to load the stove -- the smell from the stove made me just so sick and dizzy.....

Is it possible that wood stove give off carbon monoxide?

I am new to wood burning heat -- but my kids are getting sick and my husband was sick last weekend too...

Something is not right......

I felt much better when I went outside and just drank in the cold air.......

Help me out if you know about wood heat.....

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning - 09:59, Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Please pick up a carbon monoxide detector as soon as possible from your local hardward store or Walmart--the cost is well worth your families health.

Yes Gloria! If ventilation is not correct you can indeed have fumes from a wood stove. I would also look for any other source (gas stove?)

local fire departments will come out and verify as well if you have a local one near you.

In an old house, you also have the possibility of mold creating sickness, we had formaldehyde in some of the "renovation" materials that caused us issues in AR.

according to the epa (http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/coftsht.html) - a wood stove could be doing this.
also some good info here:
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/carbon_monoxide_poisoning/article_em.htm

my advice today - open all your windows and air out the house - go somewhere with the kids so that you don't all freeze (I guess your schoolhouse would work. I am still jealous of that... it sounds great!) and get a carbon monoxide detector as well. one of those two sites said that the local fire dept. can also come out and check for carbon monoxide. Good luck.

Oh Gloria! You have come to mind so much lately and now I know why! I have never had a situation like this with a wood burning stove, but I think there is a chance of this happening with improper ventilation. My advice is to call the fire dept. right away and have them come and test your home. (Remember, I am married to a Fire Chief and they are MORE THAN HAPPY to do this--it saves lives--don't hesitate!) It's better that they come and find nothing...it's NOT a wasted trip.

You have been given sound advice from others as well and I think you need to leave the house if there is any suspicion. I am praying for you and your family right now... This could *just* be flu, but that is bad enough. You poor dear! Please let us know how you are and I will continue to pray.

It could be you need venilation or it could be the actual flu. We had the real deal last year and it was 10-14 days long and then you started feeling better. THe doctor said it would take 10-14 days After the flu is over to feel more like your self.
I try to open a window or door to let some fresh air in every day the temps are over 40*. I get the stove hot and the house warm and then open the window about 2 inches on either side of the house and it helps clear the air so to speak.
I would say too if your chimney isnt working right it would hurt things too... Hope you feel better soon.

carbon monoxide - 02:23, Wednesday, January 14, 2009

This from LaJuan Marks in Colorado. Yes, please listen to the others who have posted comments. Take action now! Please....from your symptoms, this is a serious problem, not to be ignored. Call the fire department in now!
As the others mentioned, problems come from not only woodstoves (incomplete burn of the wood does produce formaldehyde - not safe), but gas stoves, new construction materials, paints and carpet - don't forget the chemical-based cleaners, etc.
We're praying for you.

Fire Department and Carbon Monoxide Detector - 03:23, Wednesday, January 14, 2009

I agree. We have one and we live in a rented townhome. Here in colder areas I think it's a must have.

Please call the fire department. That's what they're there for. Find out what their thoughts are. If it's not carbon monoxide, your concerns there are at ease and I would call a home inspector to see what they think of mold or even if they can gather what the issue is.

Gloria, I too am praying for your situation dear friend. God is good and while your facing the storms, He's STILL there. I pray for strength through the storm and that God will give wisdom and discernment as well as favor over creditors and those who may be able to help within the church to fix some things that are broken as we as a body take on one anothers burdens.

In the meantime, I have a song up on my blog that made me think of you.

Love and many prayers to you dear sister!

Could it be the furnace? - 07:31, Wednesday, January 14, 2009

You said your furnace is undependable. Is it running? Could it be that? I would get that checked as well. It definitely sounds bad! If you all went out of the house for a day or so, and got well, that would seem a conclusive strike against something there in the home. Use the carbon monoxide tester and find out where it seems to be most powerful. Then take steps to fix the problem. It is dangerous to play with that kind of problem! Let us know how it turns out! We will be praying.
