Lightning strikes

Earlier this week we had a thunderstorm. The thunder was so lound that M got up crying before she was even in bed five minutes. I held her and praised her for coming to get Mama when she was scared. This is something we've had to work on as she was adopted with her twin sister from an orphanage at the age of 2. I climbed in bed with her and held her against my chest, stroking her hair and trying to soothe her with words. D looked on from her bed and observed aloud "M's scared of the tunder. It goes boom boom boom, like that." I talked to the girls about how my mother used to tell me that it sounded like someone was dropping potatoes in the sky. Every time it thundered, I would say, "Hey, who keeps dropping potatoes up there??" M and D thought that was funny. We talked about God sending the rain to water the thirsty flowers, grass, plants and trees. D asked me, "What do the apples say?" I replied "They say, 'Lord, send us something to drink please, we're thirrrrsty!' but when the apples hear the thunder saying boomboom boom, they scold him and say 'go away thunder, you don't scare us. Go on and find someone else to bother!' and then the thunder leaves them alone" After this story we commenced yelling at the thunder that we weren't afraid of him and that he needed to go find someone else to bother. They really got a kick out of that. Finally the thunder began to recede and I was able to tuck them both in with kisses and hugs. With droopy eyes they drifted off to the faint sound of thunder. What I hadn't realized was that a lightning bolt had actually struck the tree beside our driveway during the storm. Shane told me about it in the morning. He was incredulous that I had missed it. Apparently he and the boys were in the barn when it happened. It was quite loud and from the barn doorway Shane watched it happen. The branch came off where the lightning had struck and the limb came down across our driveway, blocking us in for the next day until Shane could get it cleared with the chainsaw and hauled off in the truck. It was very exciting for the boys and I was amazed and thankful that no one was hurt, nor was any property damaged. We were thankful for the rain and for our preservation! It served to remind me that God is in control, that it is He "who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm." Job 38:25 and "He fills His hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark." Job 36:32 And of course, He is NOT dropping potatoes. Job 37 reminds us of the Lord's awesome power and majesty: "Listen! Listen to the roar of His voice, to the rumbling of His mouth. He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven and sends it to the ends of the earth. After that comes the sound of his roar; he thunders with His majestic voice. When his voice resounds, he holds nothing back. God's voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth,' and to the rain shower, 'Be a mighty downpour,' so that all men He has made may know His work, He stops every man from his labor." Blessed be the name of the Lord God Almighty. { Post a Comment } { Last Page } { Page 33 of 50 } { Next Page } |
