The Birth of a Dress... Part 3
Today, I got more done on Rebekah's dress.

While my loaves of wheat bread are rising, let me tell you all about it!

I started out, this morning, preparing the skirts of the dress. I had to pin the front to the back...

Photobucket

... And then sew the sides together.

Photobucket

Halfway through, the baby began fussing. So, she "helped" me work on her garment for just a while.

Photobucket

I know this has nothing to do with the construction of Rebekah's dress... but I had to share it with you nonetheless.

I think we're in trouble.

Rebekah has finally mastered the "art" of climbing!

Photobucket

Watch out stairs, here she comes!

Photobucket

It's enough to make any mother's knees knock!

Alright, now.  Back to our dress.

It was time to finish the sleeves.

Here I am measuring and pinning the casing for the elastic ruffle.

Photobucket

And, then, I ironed everything nice and smooth.

It makes sewing quick as a wink!

Photobucket

Once I was through there, I could stitch the casing.

Securing a safety pin at the end of my seven inches of quarter-inch elastic, I threaded the elastic through the casing and tacked it down with the machine.

Photobucket

Ta-da! A tiny little baby sleeve!

Photobucket

Can you imagine having arms this small?

Photobucket

You might be wondering how I keep the little ones entertained while I'm busy sewing. That varies.

Normally they read books together, play with blocks and toy animals or enjoy their cars and little people beside me.

Other times they ...

Photobucket

JUMP on my rebounder!

Photobucket

Today, as you can see, was one of those bouncy days for the children!

Aren't they precious!? (It's too bad I don't look as cute as that jumping on my mini trampoline each day!)

Once Rebekah's new sleeves were all stitched up, I put my attention to making my continuous lap (at the back where the buttons would later be installed) look nice and neat.

Then, I pinned the sleeves to the skirting (since this is a round yoke pattern, the sleeves are done a bit differently), and sewed them on.

That through, I could put a gathering stitch along the entire top portion of the part I now held: the sleeves and skirting both.

Photobucket

Whew!

Almost through!

I pulled my gathering stitch and took pains to spread the gathers neatly so that things would look nice as I attached the skirting to the round yoke.

I used extra straight pins for this step so things wouldn't shift so badly. It helps when sewing!

Photobucket

Once the yoke was attached to the sleeves and skirt, I had the baby's dress completed.

All that was left was the closure in back (I used three purple pearlized snaps instead of buttons. It makes dressing a wiggly baby simpler!), and sewing up the hem.

And... there we have it! A new little dress!

Photobucket

Tomorrow, I'm completing the outfit.

I had enough fabric for the bonnet and bloomers to match and thought it would be fun to do up.

Join me, again.

Isn't this fun?!

AWW! That is such a sweet dress! I really like the little blue rosebud fabric! I've been sewing up a storm lately too. Mostly grocery bags, but I did complete a blouse for myself. I need to get to Joann's and get some fabric for a skirt and I also have a dress I'd like to complete. Sew many sewing projects I'd like to do....so little time!
