When you look into the mirror, do you like what you see?
No, I am not referring to the type of mirror you probably have hanging in the bathroom or in various other places at home. But, rather, the mirror image of your personality.
Is there anything about the way you carry yourself that needs changing? Perhaps you desire to change something about the way you react in stressful situations? Are you as patient and loving as you ought to be? Can your children tell you walk at the very side of Jesus? Is your life one of holiness?
My oldest daughter will be seventeen in June.
Seventeen.
She's nearly grown! Almost an adult!
I see things in her that I see when I look at my own "reflection". Some things are heartening, but some things are also downright sobering.
My time with her is almost through. She could very well be out of the house within a couple years. I could be a grandmother within a few years. What sort of fellow will she marry? Is she secure enough and grounded enough to choose according to God's will? What kind of wife will she make? Is she generally submissive and selfless? What about my grandchildren, Lord willing? Who will they become? Will my daughter be married to a godly man who will help her to raise godly seed?
May we all have our sights set wholly on Jesus as we pass each day. May we follow through in our parenting as we ought, remembering constantly, that we are an ever-present example to our children. They are watching.
And, parents... take it from someone who knows. Your children are also becoming who they see in you. They are becoming a reflection - for good or for bad - of yourself.
I have two children who are out of the house, a dd- 24 and a ds- 23. They both have entered the world, as much as I would have prefered that they didn't lol. One day my ds was having a bad day and he reacted in a very bad way, attitude wise. I started to cry, because I knew in my heart he had gotten a bit of that from me.
You see I wasn't saved untill they were teenagers so their younger years were filled with a messy divorce and me being very depressed at times. I hope and pray that my children leave what I left behind and pick up what I have picked up in the last 10 years, they love of Jesus and the ability to let Him handle our situations instead of throwing the fits that I use to throw. I can only pray, right.
Thanks for the post.
Kitty
My oldest will be 17 this summer also.
I hold my breath many days because I was not Saved until I was in my early 30's.......and the kids were old enough to remember "the old me".
As I have lived in front of them, they have seen my Walk like this: I Sprint, I Grow, I Falter, I Stand Still, I Run the Wrong Way, I Get Up, I Sprint, I Stand Still, I Get Up, I Walk........
We have home schooled the last 4 years (first 7 years in public schools) so that has eliminated a lot of negative peer influence.........but..............are they ready?
As I draw a big deep breath, I can say that I feel they are better prepared for the world than I was.....but, is it enough?
I will lean on Him, and pray a lot......A LOT!!
Laura
Thank you, Carrie, for your always timely advice and suggestions. I do need to watch more of what I do and say because the children do model after me. I have seen some of the changes with how the children act that are apparent with my husband or myself, as we have such different temperments with the children.
It's scary, sometimes, isn't it?
How are you feeling? Time is nearing for the birth of that new beautiful baby! :)
Growing children, is hard without the Lord in it..I have been saved for quite awhile now but, before then I would cry and called my mother to put my worries and sorrows on. Not knowing Jesus, but since the day I have been saved and know to turn it over to the Lord,. life is soooo much enjoyable..Not sooooo scary..I have instilled that into my boys, which are also saved...Now if they use it, if not they will learn too soon..God Is Good !!!!
