Each spring, we have new surprises, here. It creates a lot of fun to do some investigating and learn what the different plants we encounter are. At the side of our house, we have a pretty lilac tree. For the past several years, underneath it, was a carpet of Lily of the Valley and Perennial Snow on the Mountain. But this year, when new life began appearing, we suddenly found something different.
We did some investigative work, and learned that this was Periwinkle (Vinca Major). Unfortunately, the only Lily of the Valley we have left is a short three foot strip at the front of the house. And the only Snow on the Mountain remaining is the tiny slip I transplanted last year in the front flower bed. The Periwinkle took over! It's pretty, but I'm wondering if I should do something about it... or just leave it and enjoy the lovely flowers! Another purple flower rose up this spring, as well, at the back of the house. A friend of ours called it "Creeping Jenny" and told me to get rid of it immediately. "It's a pest, and it will take over everything if you don't do something about it, now!" I looked it up and found only yellow flowers under the name, "Creeping Jenny". But, quite accidentally, learned there was something called, "Creeping Charlie" that was a purple flower. My dad visited recently. He called our purple flowers "Violets". Now I didn't know what to think! So, back to the detective work we went. And it appears my father was correct! We do have Wild Violets this year, also! And the best part is - they put themselves in the back, in a neat little clump, befriending my Balloon Flowers and Angelique Tulips.
Apparently, these pretty flowers like to spread, as well. So I will be carefully watching that they don't get "out of control"! Isn't God amazing!? He knows just how to bless us! Being here in town in not something I relish. I struggle with it each day. But, every tiny little blossom He gives us to enjoy is so appreciated! A little bit of Him, right here on our city homestead!
