Shared in Homeschooling

It's been another busy week in Jesus' Lambs Homeschool! (The children named the school two school years ago, for fun, when they heard other homeschoolers were doing it.) I wanted to begin including a "rundown" of each week's activities and learning here, specifically for family, and those of you who've written me this last while, asking how I manage with a large number of children and grade levels. I hope this helps! Here's what the children have been doing this past week:
Scarlet (6), Oliver (4), Nadia (3), Stephen (1 1/2) After breakfast, we begin our teaching morning. The four little ones sit on the floor with me, in a circle. We sing the "ABC" song together twice, and then have fun with flash cards. We're still using the same alphabet cards (contain phonics pictures). I go around my precious group and ask Scarlet and Oliver for the letter names and sounds. Nadia and Stephen get asked what the picture shows (this helps them to develop proper speech. Nadia "slurs" certain letters and Stephen is still learning to talk!) Next, we count together. Scarlet is counting to twenty. Oliver, to ten. We do a game with the number flashcards, too. We name the numbers and count the pictures. Each person who gets their card correct, gets to hold it. They all try to get the "most" (although we let Stephen and Nadia take some, even when they're not completely right!). On Mondays, it's time for our Bible story. We just got through with our last Bible lesson book, and now are beginning "Bible Stories To Read" by Rod and Staff. We always read a Bible story at the beginning of the week, and then answer questions and talk about what we read. There is a Bible memory verse we work on and memorize, including the reference. This week's verse was: "Thy Word is Truth" John 17:17 The verse is reviewed throughout the week. And Wednesday, we review the story read. Normally it is a story from the Bible, and we spend Wednesdays reading the passages directly from the King James. But, Monday, our "story" was about the Bible and why it is so important to us. So we spent Wednesday doing another story, this week ("God Created The World"), answering questions, reading it from the King James, and learning a new memory verse: "God created the heaven and the earth" Genesis 1:1 So, the little ones learned two memory verses this week! And they each earned two stickers to put in their books, as well! They were very excited! Then comes table time. This is when we do our "Bible Stories" coloring pages (Monday and Wednesday) and other worksheets. We've been working again with colors and shapes. Nadia and Oliver are doing much better at recognizing and naming them! We do coloring, cutting & pasting activities to enforce learning. Often while Nadia is working on her colors, Scarlet is doing a "math" page or a "handwriting" page. Oliver is doing a cutting and pasting activity or matching exercise on a worksheet. Stephen sits in his highchair with a book or a paper and crayons. We clean up the colors, scissors, glue, etc... and then Scarlet and I work on her reading. She is doing very well this week and has read more words! She also learned to recognize sight words such as "the" this week and number words such as "one" and "two". While Scarlet does her reading, Nadia and Stephen play quietly in the livingroom with the blocks and little people. Oliver is usually still finishing up his work. We hang up all their work for the week in the dining room on the wall. This way Daddy gets to see what they've been doing and they can "show" him how far they're coming! I think it makes them feel good to see their fine work, done so diligently, hanging for all to see!
The Three Older Children: By the time the little ones are finished with their school work, the three olders have greeted the new day and have eaten breakfast, gotten dressed, and finished their morning chore. The little ones help me clean up the school supplies that are still out, and they sit with books quietly in the livingroom as I assign school work to the olders for the day, and do any necessary reviewing/teaching for lessons. The olders have to have all work completed by 5pm.
Katie (16) & Rose (14) Math - We use Rod & Staff textbooks. We took several steps backward this week to try and "catch up" on areas they were "rusty" in. We worked with mixed fractions, simplifying/reducing fractions and adding/subtracting fractions. We also did more multiplication and division exercises, and lots of other review work. English - We use Rod & Staff texts. This week, we learned more about present perfect tense, past perfect tense, future perfect tense, transitive verbs and direct objects.
Gaelin (11) Math - Rod & Staff. Lots of review for Gaelin, too. Large subtraction problems & addition problems with carrying and regrouping. Working with money. Place value to the millions. Reading large numbers properly and writing them out correctly (both in number and word form). English - Rod & Staff. Agreement of subjects & verbs, past forms of regular verbs, developing paragraphs by using steps, past forms of irregular verbs.
Certain subjects, we share the same materials. In the evening, after the little ones are tucked in bed, we do science, history and geography together. We read the material orally, answer questions together, and assign work to be done the following day. We also correct math and English work assigned that day. Katie, Rose & Gaelin Bible - Each has scheduled personal time reading, on their own, in their Bibles. Katie and Rose take notes on things that especially touch and instruct them. I've been blessed to observe them. We need to get back into memory verses. We did not do that this week. Geography - Lots of mapwork. We're working with the USA this month. Drawing state maps, detailed with large cities, waters, etc... and state flag, flower, etc... History - The Peaceful Revolution (Rod & Staff) Science - Basic Chemistry. A Beka. This week, we learned about the scientific methods of measurements.
ALL Children/Bible: Sunday meetings, Sunday school lessons (Rod & Staff quarterlies) and daily family devotions (11am). Olders Reading: I allow the older three to read on their own. They get plenty of it in, too! At least one book per week, if not more. Books they have read/completed this week: Rose - Unspoken Love Katie - Three Lights as One Gaelin - The Bishops Shadow
