herbs or remedies for head colds, please..

Posted in Personal care

I could really use some advice or suggestions on what herbs or home remedies you have used for head colds.  My girlie and I both have one, hers is a stuffy/runny nose and now a barking cough and mine is head congestion and a sore throat from drainage.  I put lots of garlic on our pork chops last night and drank some peppermint tea (recommended by a book I have) but I need your help.  I need to know what to use and how to use it, please.

Blessings,

Rashel

Colon Cleanse

Posted in Personal care

I have been interested in doing a colon cleanse for awhile and I finally found a site that made it doable for me. I didn't want to spend alot of money and I didn't want to have to change my diet tremendously and with this plan, I don't have to do either.  I first read about it at Kris' blog and she linked me to the original site, which is here.  I don't have much time right now to go into it, so if you are interested in learning more, just follow the links.  I started it this morning and I will try to post my journey as I go.

Have to run to the P.O. before they close, they are only open an hour on Saturday mornings.  Then, I have to run to the farm where we buy our raw milk and pick up a couple more gallons.  Then it is home to clean, clean, clean!!

Have a wonderful day!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Posted in Personal care

I imagine we all know someone that has been effected by breast cancer.  I do.  I have had 2 great aunts pass away after their battle with breast cancer, another great aunt is still fighting her battle and a friend of mine just turned 40 and has just begun her battle.  So, I am going to be changing my blog for the month of October and adding some things to help promote breast cancer awareness.  I will be posting a button (link)  on my sidebar for you to visit the breast cancer site and help a woman receive a free mammogram.  It is FREE to you, all you have to do is visit the site and click on the pink "Click Here to Give - It's Free" button.  That is all.  The sponsors of the site are paying for mammograms for women that cannot afford them based on the number of clicks on the site. AND if they get 500 clicks in October, the site's premier sponsor will pay for an additional 150 mammograms! You can visit and click on the button everyday.  How easy is that to help with the fight against breast cancer!!  Here are some statistics for you: (taken from the above mentioned site)

Early Detection: Do You Know The Facts?

Each year, 182,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year.

If detected early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer exceeds 95%. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.

The National Cancer Institute and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend that women in their forties and older have mammograms every one to two years. A complete early detection plan also includes regular clinical breast examinations by a trained medical professional. Monthly breast self-exams are suggested in addition.

So, let's all do what we can do help with early detection and the fight against breast cancer.  What are you waiting on?  Go click that button!!!!

7 day detox website

Posted in Personal care

I found a website that goes into alot of detail about the 7 day detox diet, so I thought I would share it with you.  My7daydiet.com has alot of info and tips on there.  The "wonder" soup recipe is slightly different but the main diet for each day is very similar.  So, it isn't the exact diet but it is VERY close and they give some tips on stir frying the vegetables for certain days and how much olive oil and such to use.  Maybe this will help somebody with some ideas or motivation.

Detox diet update

Posted in Personal care

Well, if you have been following along, you know that I have failed miserably with the 7 day detox diet.  I did fairly well the first couple of days, with only minimal cheating  but then it just got worse.  I was thinking about it last night, after a few blogging friends had asked me how I was doing on it and after we got home from eating at a pizza buffet .  I realized that although I had cheated, I really did feel better the first few days I was on this diet.  I had more energy and just fell good overall, last night on the other hand, I felt icky.  I realized I had way to much soda yesterday and it was really effecting how I felt.  I was also thinking that it doesn't really say much about my self control or will power if I can't control how I eat for 7 days.  I mean, that is only a week right ?   So, I am going to try again.  I am better prepared this time, I have the food on hand and I know mentally how challenging it will be.  I want to try it again and see if it really makes that much difference in how I feel or if that was just coincidence.

So, will you wish me luck and check in on me to hold me accountable?  I am starting today, why put it off right?  I have my soup already made from before and I still have some fruit on hand.  I will check in later and let you know how it is going.

Want to join me?  I know there are a few who will be doing it in a few days, are you up for it?

Blessings,

Rashel

7 Day Detox Diet

Posted in Personal care

I found this diet over at Dana's blog and I want to give it a try.  I have been wanting to do a detox diet but hadn't found one I thought I could do.  I think I can do this, although, it will be hard.  I just want to add that I am not doing this to lose the weight (although, I have gained 5 lbs the last month), I am doing this for the detox and extra energy.  I want to see how different I feel after detoxing my system.  So, I have copied and pasted the diet off of Dana's blog to below.  If you want to join us, please leave a comment and let me know.  I plan to start tomorrow.  I may need a little encouragement, especially the day I have to eat 8 bananas!   I have my grocery list made to pick up everything I am going to need and I will go while in town tomorrow.   So, would you like to join me (us)?

This is a 7 day eating plan that can be used as often as you like.  If correctly followed it will clean out your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being as never before.  After only 7 days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter by at least 4,5 - 7,7kg.(10 pounds)  You will have abundance of energy.  Continue on this plan as long as you wish to feel the difference.  This diet is fast fat-burning and the secret is that you will burn more calories than you can take in.

The Soup
2 cans of tomatoes or fresh tomatoes
3 large onions
1 bunch of celery
2 green peppers
2 cans of green beans or fresh beans
2 large bunches of carrots

Method: Season with salt/pepper, beef cubes.  I used Bay Leaf, & powder garlic also(Robbin) it adds more flavor. Cut veggies in small to medium pieces. Cover with boiling water and cook.  Reduce heat to simmer and continue cooking.  This soup can be eaten ANY TIME you are hungry, eat as much as you like whenever you want.  This does not contain calories.  The more you eat the more you lose.

Drinks:  unsweetened juices, tea, coffee, cranberry juice, skimmed milk and water, water, water....

DAY ONE
Any fruit except bananas, watermelon & spanspek(cantaloupe) are lower in calories than other fruits. Eat only soup and fruits today.

DAY TWO
All vegetables. Eat till you are stuffed with fresh, raw, cooked or canned vegetables. Try to eat green leafy veggies. Stay away from dry beans, peas or corn.  At dinner tonight, reward yourself with a big baked potatoe and butter.  Do NOT eat ANY fruit today.

DAY THREE
Eat all the soup, fruit and veggies you want. DO NOT have a baked potatoe. If you have eaten as above for 3 days and not cheated, you should have lost 2.2 to 3.1 kg (4-6 pounds)

DAY FOUR
Bananas and skimmed milk - eat at least 8 bananas and as much milk as you can today.  Also eat the soup.  Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates as in milk.  On this particular day your body will need potassium and carbohydrates which lessen the craving for fruit.

DAY FIVE
Beef and tomatoes. You may have 625 grams(22 oz.) of beef and 4 tomatoes on this day. Eat soup at least once today.

DAY SIX
Beef and veggies.  Eat to your heart's content of the beef  and veggies today.  You can have 2 - 3 steaks with green leafy veggies, but NO baked potatoe. Be sure to eat soup at least once today.

DAY SEVEN
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice and veggies.  Again be sure to stuff yourself and eat soup.  You can add cooked veggies to your rice if you wish.

By the end of the 7th day you should have lost 4,5 - 6,8 kg (10 pounds). If you lost more than 7,7 kg stay off the diet for 2 days before resuming the diet again.  This diet does not lend itself to any alcoholic beverages at all.  Because of the fat build-up in your system, go off the diet at least 24 hours before any intake of alcohol.  Because everyone's digestive system is different, this diet will affect everyone differently.  After 3 days you will have more energy than when you began if you don't cheat.  After being on the diet for several days, you will find your bowel movements have changed.  Eat a cup of bran or fiber.

Although you can have black coffee with this diet, you may find that you don't need caffeine after the third day.  The basic fat burning soup can be eaten anytime you feel hungry during the 7 days. Eat as much as you wish.  Remember the more you eat the more you lose. You can eat boiled or baked chicken instead of beef(no skin). If you prefer you can eat fish instead of beef on one of the beef days.  You need the high protein in the beef for the other day.  Any prescribed medication will not hurt or affect you on this diet.  Continue the diet plan as long as you wish, and feel the difference both mentally and physically.

DO NOT! DO NOT! DO NOT! eat bread, drink alcohol, carbonated drinks (including diet drinks) REMEMBER....absolutely no fried foods!

DO! DO! DO! Drink plenty of water, at least 6 - 8 glasses a day as well as any combination of the following beverages...black coffee, unsweetened tea, unsweetened fruit drinks, cranberry juice and skimmed milk.
**Disclaimer: I have not tried this and cannot say what medical effects it may have on you.  I make no promises of more energy or weight loss.  Please consult your doctor before starting if you have any health conditions which may be affected by this diet.

Naturally curly hair

Posted in Personal care

I was reading a post on Kate's blog about her hair journey and discovering her natural curl.  I also have naturally curly hair.  I used to hate it because it was more of a wave than a curl.  Since learning a couple tips about taking care of the curls, my curls or more like a loose perm, which I love.  I did post this as a comment on her site but thought others might want to know and not see it there.  She talks on her site about not using shampoo so I will let you read about that there.  My tip is more about after you shampoo (or not).  While in the shower, I run my fingers through my hair to get out all the tangles and then I make sure to let the water run over my hair again without messing with it.  When I dry my hair, I use the towel to scrunch it gently. I do NOT rub or pull it, only gently scrunch it all around.  Sometimes I will use gel to control frizz (esp in humid weather) but most of the time I don't use any styling products.  That is it, just let it dry.  Don't comb it, pick it or otherwise.  Running your fingers through in the shower to remove tangles is enough.  My hair is also much healthier since doing away with store bought shampoo or conditioner, I don't even need conditioner anymore.  It has been months since my last cut and I don't have any split or drying ends.  I highly recommend you either go "no poo" or natural shampoo, it is much better for your hair.

Hope this helps somebody and if you have any questions, you can ask in a comment or message me.

Rashel
