The End to Diary with No Shampoo

Posted on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 03:59 - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I have been without commercial shampoo for somewhere near 80 days.
 I have been using different things for my hair in replacement of commercial shampoo. I have used whipped egg whites, homemade soaps, baking soda, and apple cider vinegar. These things have been working great for my hair up until these past few weeks,
 My hair feels very sticky now and has the smell of smoke. I think that the sticky feeling on my hair is sebum.
 My hair just doesn't seem to be coming clean, right now. For the past two days, I have used baking soda, to take of the sticky feeling and apple cider vinegar, to help rinse of the baking soda and the build-up feeling of my hair. Even after washing with these for two days in a row the sticky feeling is just not going away.
 When I take a shower, a lot of hair is falling out, more than normal.
 So, for right now, this is good-bye to the 'no 'poo' hair treatment. Tomorrow, I will go back to washing my hair in the store stuff.
 This is the end of my Diary with no shampoo......for now. I will probably go back to 'no 'poo' someday. I will share with you when I do.

The Negative Effects of Calendula?

Posted on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 04:31 - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

In reply to a comment, I did a little more research about Calendula. I couldn't find any information with such negative effects of Calendula. I was just wondering, has anybody else heard of or read about negative effects of Calendula?  I am studying herbs and I find them very interesting. I would love for you to share any information about Calendula or your favorite herbs.

You got me curious about Calendula, so I went to my trusty Complete Guide to Safe Herbs by Chris D. Meletis, N.D. to investigate. It apparently does more than look pretty and give off a lovely fragrance....

It has substances in it that help stimulate wound healing and has anti-inflammatory effects. It can be used as an ointment, tincture or spray for external use to treat skin problems, especially cuts, sores, rashes, and slow healing wounds. (Not to be used on deep wounds or severe injures as it is also known as "pot marigold." I'm assuming that is not good.) It is safe to use externally on children.

Caution: Internal use can cause uterine bleeding and miscarriage.

Looks like using it in tea might not be such a good idea, but in a soap would be wonderful healing for the skin.

Many Blessings,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SIDE EFFECTS AND CAUTIONS
As culinary herb, the calendula is considered to be one of the safest herbs around. At the same time, a person can react badly to the calendula, for example, a person who has an allergic reaction to pollen of any plant species belonging to the daisy family of plants, like the ragweed, may experience an allergic reaction to the calendula as well, though the chances of this occurring are rare.
Being considered safe and moderately therapeutic, the calendula herb is very often used in preparing homemade skin remedies, which are used in treating a variety of skin complaints. Though quite rare, there are occasions when some individuals develop an allergic reaction to the calendula as a result of frequent use of the herbal calendula skin remedy.
The menstrual cycle is traditionally believed to be influenced by calendula herb. Due to these concerns, some authorities on herbs suggest that calendula must not be consumed by pregnant women and nursing mothers, however, no evidence of harm from the use of calendula in these women exist.
Any information that you all could share would be great!
Did You Know......All Soaps Have Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)? Read here to find out more!
Posted on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 02:01 - 5 Comments - Post Comment - Link
I made a batch of soap this evening, it is goat milk soap. When this soap is ready to use, I think I will list some of it in my store.
Making goat milk some was neat. It was different than just using water in the soap. The goat milk turned orange when it is added to the lye. All of the sites I read on the internet said that the goat milk/lye mixture would turn orange.
Oh...by the way...Did you all know that all soaps have lye in them, even the soaps that come from the store? Without lye, there is no soap. Most store soaps list lye as Sodium Hydroxide or they list it under other things.
Many people are afraid of homemade soap because of the lye (Sodium Hydroxide). I tell them that all soaps have lye in them, with out lye...no soap.
The bad thing about commercial soaps is that the commercial soaps take out all the glycerin in there soaps. Glycerin is very good for your skin!
The commercial soaps take out the glycerin and sell it. Have you ever seen those bags full of bars of glycerin at places like hobby lobby? Those bars of glycerin come from soap and without lye there is no soap.
Many people just melt down bars of glycerin, scent it, and call it soap. Many say that it is there glycerin bars of soap have no lye, but....glycerin comes from soap...and without lye....there is no soap.
My homemade soap has all the glycerin left in!
In the Garden
Posted on Monday, May 26, 2008 at 01:02 - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link
The rain washed up a lot of the seeds Dad and sister planted. I don't think the corn got washed up, but I think most of the beans did.
 I added a few more things in the garden today. I planted the  four of the six Jalapeno Peppers that I started in the house.(Some of you might have see them on my blog when they were seedlings, click here to take you to the post with picture of the Peppers when they were little sprouts) I meant to plant all six of them, but I forgot two of them in the house! I hope to plant the other two of them tomorrow. I also planted some Calendula seeds along the edge of the garden. I thought some Calendulas would be a pretty site in the garden!
I recently learned that Calendula is an herb! I am going to try to make some tea if they grow. I would also like to make some soap with Calendula petals. I am not sure what Calendulas smell like, I will have to wait and see if they smell nice.
So right now this is what is in the garden:
Green Beans (if they didn't all get washed away)
Corn
Rudker Tomatoes
Jalapeno Pepper plants
Calendulas
Hopefully, we will get some more things in the garden this week.
YUM! Macroni and Tomatoes Recipe
Posted on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at 02:43 - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link
This is a delicious family recipe! I have been making this recipe a lot since Mom has been sick, it is something that isn't spicy so, she eats this often and she LOVES them!!The doctors want Mom to gain a bit more weight before she starts chemo, because chemo tears her down. I have been trying to make her favorite foods so she can gain the weight that the doctors want her to weigh!
Here is what you will need to make this recipe:
  • One large pot with lid
  • A Strainer
  • A Large Spoon
  • 1 Cup of Elbow Macaroni
  • 1 Quart of Home-grown, Home-canned Tomatoes
  • A little butter
  • 1 Spoonful of Bacon Grease
First, prepare all of your ingredients.
Then, fill the large pot 1/2 - 3/4 way full with water. Put the pot  with lid on the stove on high heat.
When the water in the pot begins to boil, put in the on cup of macaroni. Let the water and macaroni boil for 10 - 11 minutes on high heat. Stir the macaroni ocasionally to prevent the macaroni from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
After the water and macaroni have been boiled for  10 - 11 minutes, pour the pot of water and Macaroni into the strainer and strain out all of the water. Then, put the macaroni back into the pot. Put a little bit of butter into the pot with the macaroni, just so the macaroni doesn't stick to each other or the bottom of the pot.
Now, pour in the quart of tomatoes into the pot and add the spoonful of bacon grease. Put the pot on low heat on the stove so it stays warm until ready to serve.
This recipe is really simple and it is really delicious. I hope you all enjoy it!
Mom has Cancer Again
Posted on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 10:46 - 9 Comments - Post Comment - Link
Some of you might have read on my mom's blog about her having cancer. Well, she just had surgery about two weeks ago and the doctors found cancer again. It was in her colon, again. The last time it was in her colon and they cut away some of the colon and reconnected it so she didn't have to have an ostimy bag.
 This time the doctors removed her colon so she has to wear an ostimy bag. It is permanent. She doesn't mind it though!
She is back home now, our family is so glad about that! She is doing pretty well. I think she is doing so much better than the last two times.
She will have to have chemo again. The doctors are deciding on which kind to give her.
Well, I just thought I would let you all know how she was doing. I thought some of you might have been wondering where she has been ;) You might have noticed she has not been posting much one her blog.
Not Usually
Posted by Cindeerella on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 10:47 - Link - Edit - Delete
I only read posts where the title is something interesting because I do not like to spend too much time on the computer.
I have a few regular blogs I visit, but they are more informational blogs on things I am interested in....cooking, decorating, etc...
My personal blog here on HSB is mostly for family members and close friends, not for the general public.
Why does it matter to you if people read your blog or not?
You asked, "Why does it matter to you if people read you blog or not?"
 My purpose for my blog is to share what I know with others here in this blog community and and with others on the web. Nobody in my family knows about my blog, except for my mom, dad, sister, and brother.
If nobody read my blog, there would be no purpose to blog. That is why I made that post, to see if anybody actually cared about what I write and share here.
Most of the posts on my blog are informative and educational, I am trying to devote my blog only for posts about cooking, gardening, sewing, and other things that would help a homesteader.
I try to put interesting titles on my posts.
Polydimethylsiloxane also known as Dimethicone - Is it in your shampoo???
Posted on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 01:56 - 3 Comments - Post Comment - Link
I was doing a search on the internet to find out what is in the store shampoos. Here is one of the ingredients in store shampoo Polydimethylsiloxane I did a search on. It is also known as Dimethicone
 This ingredient is used in caulking, lubricating oils, heat resistant tiles, and SHAMPOO!
 I just doesn't sound like something I would want to put on my hair.
By the way, I am still no store shampoo!
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most widely used silicon-based organic polymer, and is particularly known for its unusual rheological (or flow) properties. Its applications range from contact lenses and medical devices to elastomers, in shampoos (as dimethicone makes hair shiny and slippery), caulking, lubricating oils and heat resistant tiles.
PDMS is optically clear, and is generally considered to be inert, non-toxic and non-flammable. It has been assigned CAS number 63148-62-9, and is occasionally called dimethicone. It is one of several types of silicone oil (polymerized siloxane).
Is Anybody Reading My Posts???
Does anybody read my posts? I was just wondering because, I only get one or two comments for each post I post. Does that mean only one or two people are reading my posts?
 I am trying to see how many people actually read my posts. So, if you read my posts could you leave a comment just to say that you read it? I am trying to see if my blogging here is worth it.
~The Garden Goose~
---------------------------------------------------------------
This is my post for the first week's theme Tie One On. 4/7/08 through 4/11/08
---------------------------------------------------------------
This is my favorite apron of my many aprons. It  was given to me, by my Granny. She knows that I like old things and aprons, so she gave it to me. I am not sure of where it came from. I can tell that is it a hand-made apron and that it is a vintage apron.
I enjoy imagining who the apron was made by or who the apron belonged to before me. Did it belong to a mother or a granny?
 What kind of foods did they cooked while wearing this apron? Fried chicken, chicken gravy and mashed potatoes? Maybe an apple pie?
 I imagine these kind of things while I am wearing this apron and all of my other old aprons.
Aprons and other old things are special to me because they help me imagine ways that are different than today. The ways of the past.
Here is a picture of it.
Here is a close-up of the fruit design.
Isn't it pretty? I love the fruit design on this apron and the bright colors!
Plasticine: Do you Know What it is? I DO!!!!
Posted on Monday, April 14, 2008 at 06:05 - 4 Comments - Post Comment - Link
For my family's homeschooling, we read lots and lots of books. I am finishing reading the book Mary Poppins in  the Park by P.L. Travers. It is a very exciting book! There is always something exciting in every chapter, so it will really hold young children's attention. My brother LOVES being read too. He loved to hear any kind of story!
One of the chapters in the book was called,"Park in the Park". That chapter was talking about Jane making little platicine people and making a tiny park within the park she was in.
I couldn't figure out what plasticine was. My brother kept saying, "What is plasticne?" I didn't know......until we saw a package if it at the Cracker Barrel. It was on sale too, so Mom bought a package of it to play with and make are own little people like Jane did in the story.
Here is the person I made
For those of you who don't know what Plasticine is, it is....well....it's plasticine. It is like a clay, playdough type of thing. It is really fun to play with and it never dries out!
The camera is dead so I couldn't load the picture of my brothers on here.
It is interesting how I discovered something, through a book, that I might have never noticed in my life. You can really learn from books! My family doen't do much of a curriculum, we just read, write, and do math.
Any person would enjoy Mary Poppins in the Park by P.L. Travers. it is so exciting!! My favorite chapter was the first one in the book, "Every Goose a Swan". My little brother and I laughed and laughed and laughed at the charactors in that chapter! It was too funny!
It is so neat to see how much a young child enjoys a book. Some parts of the book I thought he wasn't really listening to, but I found out later when he was telling EVERYBODY about it who would listen. He kept saying,"Oh, It is so funny. You have to read that book."
It gives me such a good feeling to see how much he enjoys being read to.
That is all for now!
My Hair Still Feels GREAT!!!!!
Posted on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 07:46 - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link
I am still washing my hair in whipped egg whites and my hair feels WONDERFUL!!! Today, when I took my shower, I put some olive oil on the ends of my hair. Olive oil makes my dry ends full of moisture!
When I was using store shampoo, my hair was so flat. Now I have a little body to my hair! I love it!
My Diary of no Shampoo---Day 6 and 7
Posted on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 10:01 - 3 Comments - Post Comment - Link
Here is day 6 and 7 of no shampoo. Day 7 was today and day 6 was yesterday.
Day 6 (yesterday, Thursday April 3rd)-
I didn't do anything to my hair. When I got ready for bed, I brushed to distribute the oils to the rest of my hair. I now can feel my hair getting a little oily. I haven't shampooed my hair with egg whites since Monday, I have been rinsing my hair with water when I took my showers earlier in the week.
Day 7 (today, Friday April 4th)-
Today my hair feels as oily as it usually does when I use store shampoo, which is a lot of oil. I shampooed it with whipped egg whites. It feels GREAT!
It will be an entire week tomorrow that I have been without store shampoo! I really feel the difference in my hair! It is great! Usually, with store shampoo, my hair and the top of my hair was practically soaked with oils, it was disgusting. Shampoo would dry my scalp out so bad and then I would start to get oily just an hour or two after I shampooed my hair. Now my hair has moisture in it, egg shampoo does not dry out my hair, and my hair is way less oily. My hair is softer, healthier looking, and I now have a little bit of natural wave back to my hair like I used to have when I was little.
If you have problems with store shampoos or if you are looking for a natural shampoo try this. Give it a week or two to get use to it. I think you will really like the results!
