While tilling the potato patch today dh had an idea on how to build a tool to hill potatoes. It easy to build and works well. Much faster then hilling with a hoe. |

Since we have had so many projects on the go this winter/spring, we decided to buy some of our plants. This will give us a jump on the season. I am still starting many of our own seedling but doing it this way will give a longer harvest time.
Many of the stores and garden centers in our area seem to be running week's behind "normal". We looked through many large stores for weeks and were unable to find seed starter mix anywhere! It wasn't that they were sold out, but they had not gotten any stock in. I finally found 1 small bag in a local Canadian Tire store. When I asked if they had more they were able to find 3 more in the back. It wasn't my preferred brand, I like an organic seed starter with out any fertilizers added. But it was better then nothing. lol
We've already planted our Spanish onions, garlic, radishes, carrots, swish chard, green onions and endive.
We went to a small privet garden center to get our plants. While the price at a smaller privet center is a little more then say one in a Wal-Mart or grocery store, the quality is better and the customer service to!
This is what we bought there. Each package has 6 plants.
I also picked up a few seeds while I was there. We still have our own potato seed we save each year.
In addition to these plants I also have seeds for the following that we will be growing this year.

We have been wanting to build a greenhouse for a long time. So we have been saving old windows for a few years. We were lucky that a friend was replacing some of his older windows. Then dh found a big stack of them in the scrap metal area of the dump. They were newer sliding type. So after looking over our stock pile we decided to try building a 6 x 6 greenhouse. Here are some video of us building it, I hope they help anyone else interested in trying it to. |

We've been pretty busy around the homestead! Our latest project is building new raised beds and a greenhouse. The green house is 6 feet by 6 feet. We've been saving old windows for a few years as we planed this project.
TIP! Check your local dump for old windows. Often you can find them in the scrap metal area (newer storm windows) for free or wooden framed ones in the burnable section. Also check with your township department. They often have large piles of leaf compost and wood chips free for the taking. That has been a huge blessing to our gardens!
We will be starting most of our seedlings in that. When they are ready to be moved to the big garden, some of our tomatoes will be planted in the greenhouse.
Our onions and garlic are coming up nicely to.

The news is calling for rain all weekend. So I decided to pop out to the garden and get anything that was ready. The girls had a good time helping pick beans! I got another large bowl of them and some cucumbers and zucchini (normal and Italian). Also two more tomatoes, they are ripening very slowly this year. I sure hope they pick up soon! There are TONS of green ones out there.
