Don't know if I told you but I made a awesome deal with a sweet lady at our church who also homeschools. I make 4 large loaves of bread a week for her and she teaches my 2 oldest boys piano! Isn't that awesome. There is no way we could afford it otherwise! I know we are getting a steal of a deal, so when I can I will sweeten her deal. I love to barter....have you bartered for anything? Share it with me!

This time of year is sooooo not my own.....It seems like Sept and October are so busy. Between back into the routine of homeschooling and trying to can the summer and fall's harvest I just dont have a spare minute! At last count I think I have canned somewhere over 700 jars this summer!!!!! DH said we may have to get a stronger floor in our food storage room! Heeeheee
Anyway the last few weeks I have done sweet and sour sauce, peach pie filling, tons of dried apples. I have had 2 dehydraters running around the clock. I also did 12 1/2 gallon jars of grape juice and 5 qts. I plan on doing more grape juice next week and when the rome apples come on I plan on doing about 30 qts of apple pie filling. I did enough apple sauce last year that I dont have to do that this year.
Cant wait until it is cold outside and canning is over. I am dreaming of the day where me and my littles are on the couch wrapped up in blankets and sipping hot chocolate and eating homemade cinnamon rolls and reading a great novel together.....ahhhh! I should have been a bear....I love winter! Lately all of our friends have been busy and no one can get together....so the hermit life calls me anyway......cheaper that way anyway, right?

Besides homeschooling, cleaning house and doing like 3 loads of laundry, and bringing our oldest to cub scouts, today DH and I went to Oregon....heehee....we live on the Idaho/Oregon border...like 3 miles from Oregon....anyway....they had a case lot sale in Oregon so we bought lots of stuff. Some of it isnt very healthy, but will help in a pinch!  I bought 4- 25 lb bags of sugar for $8.99 a piece. 4 cases of smack ramen for $3.00 a case. 10- 2lb bags of brown sugar, for 4-$5.00A case of mandarin oranges for 2-88 cents. A case of pineapple 20 oz cans for .88 a piece. Also got some 90-10% hamburger for $1.69 a lb.   And a case of 24 macaroni and cheese boxes for $6.00.  Also they had seasoning packets for 3-88cents. Got sloppy joe, beef stew, taco, brown gravy, turkey gravy, pork gravy, and meatloaf. Very good deal on these! They are usually $1.19 a piece.  Felt pretty good about the deals I got! Can use many of the items with some of our healthy stuff. Also I am making  some more canned sweet and sour sauce this week and the pineapple will be just the ticket!  Also stopped at the farmers market in Fruitland, Idaho. The produce was so gorgeous! The bell peppers were huge!!! And so many colors.....yellow, red, orange, chocolate color, green and purple! I got 3 of each kind because they were 3 for a dollar. Also they had beautiful winter and summer squash and local celery!

I've Been Tagged!

OK, here's the new game for all us bloggers. First, someone tags you, then you follow these rules:

  • Link to the person who tagged you.
  • Post the rules on your blog.
  • List 6 unspectacular quirks you have.
  • Tag 6 bloggers by linking to them.
  • Leave a comment on each taggee's blog to let them know they were tagged.

Thank you Laurie for the tag!  Well I don't dare ask my children if I am quirky cause they would never tell me in fear of hurting my feelings. Sooo I am going to list the ones I KNOW I have and then have the children read it and comment with thier own idea's of my quirks. Be nice kids, I will be watching you!

Well, here are what I think are my quirks!

1) I stay up at least twice a week until 4 am or get up at 4 am so that I can have time to myself for at least 4 hours before anyone else is awake.

2) I love MICE, all kinds of mice, don't get me wrong I don't like when they invade my kitchen (although I have never had that problem before, I guess cause they know I like them but my cats don't). I am not talking the Mickey mouse type of mouse I like the cute cuddly mice and realistic mice. My family thinks that is weird but hey,. everyone is weird in one way or another.

3) AT 44 yrs old I like to draw and color and paint little kid things. Some say it's my artistic talent and some say I am quirky.

4) My house can be a wreck but if my bed is not made it drives me NUTS!!!

5) I like to drink milk with ice.

6) I can EAT 12 thirty two ounce glasses of ice a day, nothing added, just the ice!

So what are your quirks? Now I am supposed to tag six other people so here it goes....

I am tagging....

Kim over at A place to call Home

Kathy at Aunt Kathy's Home

Stitchinchick at SimpleFolk

HisIrishGem at Abundant Harvest Homestead

Julie at Hatfield House

Chas at Heritage Acres Farm

Well that's it folks I can't wait to see how quirky my friends are!

Yes I am another year older as of 1 week ago. Last Friday was my birthday and I turned 40. I had a great week. My husband threw me a surprise party. He bought me pearls. A necklace , earrings, and a bracelet. In both white and gray. They are all beautiful.
This week the weather is turning a little more chilly. Lows in the 40's at night. The sky is beautiful though. Cornflower blue is what they call it. Oh I almost forgot he bought me boots from TSC too. My others were just not as comfortable as I would have liked them to be.  He's so good to me.
We had a busy week. Today is catch up day. Lots of laundry and cleaning and cooking. Just my kind of day. I love to be at home making it cozy for my family.

Window update, and the art of decluttering, or why my back hurts.

Whew. I have had quite the day today, let me tell you. For some reason I have this urge to purge -- and I'm not referring to an eating disorder. I have been decluttering and re-organizing everything in sight! And not a moment too soon, either. I know that Mrs. Michelle Duggar once said that she didn't really get organized until her fourth of fifth baby came along. I understand why!

I am not naturally an organized person, exactly, but having five small children living in a limited space has really brought the necessity for organization to the glaringly obvious forefront. My brain can't handle the stress and strain of all this *stuff*. Once during a previous decluttering spell, my husband complained that I was getting rid of too much, but I gently explained to him that this *stuff* was challenging my mental health, and he relented. This time around, I know he was feeling the strain too, and so he was actually eager and enthusiastic about my efforts to streamline our belongings. Actually, I am not sure "streamline" does my efforts justice. I think I'll go back to the word, "purge".

Here is a photo of the clothing of four of my five children (not including the clothing that is still on the line outside, or in the hamper. I will deal with that as I process it). I went into their rooms, and threw every single item of clothing into laundry baskets, and then dumped it all on the couches in the living room. This is not including the clothing that I organized yesterday -- the non-current sizes that are being saved for children to grow into (although you can see some of that on the coffee table, all boxed up and ready to go back into storage). This is just the current stuff that they have been wearing, or throwing directly onto the floor, or whatever. I think it is pretty impressive.

Probably even more impressive in person.

So, I actually got that all organized, and here is the photo of all the clothes that are ready to go to the charity store (as well as a few toys that made their way into the outbox):

Anyhow. The above photo is not nearly as amazing as a current one would be (which I would post here, except it is now dark and I don't like using the flash, and plus I just can't be bothered). Because now I have seriously culled the kids' toys, every last one. That little room is now, literally, half full of stuff. I mean, it is full half way to the ceiling. Seriously. So yes, I am awesome. Thank you.

In other news, I finished my window makeover yesterday. It is hard to get a good photo of a window with the curtains open because (at least with my stupid camera) the light coming in makes for a dark photo. I'll tell you what I did: I washed the window and the screen, took down, laundered and rehung the curtain, and made some braided, rag rug style tie-backs. Nothing fancy, but that's the way we like things around here.

Yeah, it works. I dig it.

So what did YOU do today?

Outside My Windowwell since I am writing in the evening this time there is total darkness outside my window right now. I can't even see the moon.

I am thinkingabout my parents and wishing I could share my thoughts and feelings with them right now. I am going through some things with the homeschool group I was a part of, stress here at home, the pain of being so far away from my son and his wife and well, just life's things. I am sure many of you know where I am at.

I am thankful forthe Lord whom I can lean on in my times of trouble and pain.

From the kitchen…I can smell the herbal tea that I am about to consume to help rid myself of this horrible headache!

I am wearing…a black t-shirt with wild horses running across the front, red socks, and my black capri's. Gee seems a bit .... dark :-(

I am creating a set of post cards and a set of notecards that will be packaged to sell at the visitors center.

I am goingnowhere else today. I did my grocery shopping and ran my errands for the day. Tomorrow I might go out and enjoy a day of painting in the park... not sure on that yet though.

I am readingThe old schoolhouse magazine and "Sketching Outdoors in Summer by. Jim Arnosky

I am hopingthat things will calm down around here and we can get on with planning fun activities just as a family

I am hearingThe loud sounds of my dear husbands music as he watches one of his favorite bands on TV! Sorry honey I must be getting old but ARGH it is loud. hehehe

Around the housethe children are preparing for bed and checking to see what is on the agenda for tomorrow.

One of my favorite things…Cute MICE, Cuddly Mice, brown mice, white mice,  and umm did I say Mice!! :-)

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week: Preparing the October calendar for school, fun activities, doctor appointments and whatever has been planned. Finishing up some artsy swaps I am in and starting the final draft of my new book.

Here is picture thought I am sharing....

thoughts on homeschooling

HSLDA had an article posted this morning, and I wanted to share my thoughts about it.

Here is the article.  It is not long, but it is poignant.  Basically it says that homeschool graduates are TONS (I am using this word instead of the exact percentages because they vary depending on the activity involved) more likely to vote and be involved in elections than non-homeschooled 20-somethings.

The thing that made me laugh was this quote here:
"
One of the reasons for this heightened involvement in society is that many homeschool families teach American history, which shows how important it was during the founding of this nation to have men and woman who were well-educated and powerful advocates for their positions."

Without actually saying so, it implies that public schools do NOT teach American history, and the importance of a good education.  Now, I love history, and I have since 5th grade when I was reading my history text under my desk while my teacher droned on about something else (he got after me for not paying attention, and asked what I was doing.  I remember his surprise that I was reading my history book for entertainment).  So, anyway, I love history, and often went deeper into the history we were studying in my ps classes, just because I liked it.  But my goodness, so much was not even mentioned!  The point of this ramble is that I agree with this implication of ps history-teaching.

And my final thought on this article is that it highlights EXACTLY why the teachers unions and liberal nanny-staters want to get rid of the Homeschool movement: We produce thinkers and actors.  Homeschool graduates are not likely to sit on the couch and watch American Idol, thinking that their vote there is the only one that matters.  We are more likely to get up, get out, and ACT on our knowledge and convictions.  And that is dangerous to the liberal agenda.

What do you think?
