Make It Do

Make it do
- With finances the way they are- we are really learning more and more about making do. A fine example is the fact that Mr. Conductor is pedaling around on Maiden’s old bike- not only did we not have the finances for a new bike but why purchase one when we have a perfectly good usable one right here at home? We are blessed that Maiden picked a flashy blue-green color for her first bike so it’s not like Mr. Conductor is toodling around on a pink and purple cycle. We took off any of the fussy-foo-foo and he is just one happy clam biking up and down the sidewalk like a maniac. The girls have had to make do lately after their CD player went kaput. They haven’t been able to replace it yet and yet- life has continued to go on. We, as a family, have enjoyed listening to the girls Adventures in Odyssey and Jonathan Park CDs since they have to use the stereo system in the living room for their listening pleasure. Mr. Steady got so hooked on the Jonathan Park story line that he kept listening while the kiddos were having quiet time.
We are also making do with our car right now. It’s a bit of a tight fit getting 2 car seats and 3 kids in the back seat of our car and sure, we’d love to have a minivan but it just isn’t possible for us right now- and with gas prices what they are we are very thankful for a car that averages 28 miles to the gallon.
A wonderful way to make do is the library. I had to cancel some of my favorite magazine subscriptions because we just couldn’t afford the extravagance. And I’ve had to cut back on my book buying for now (except for school needs . . . .). The library helps us to make do- most of my magazines are available there and of course, if I want a book they don’t have there is always the inter library loan system.
Speaking of wonderful ways to make do- our family vacation will be spent camping in my uncle’s backyard. My uncle and his wife recently moved to the U.P. (that
Upper Peninsula for non-Michiganians) and have repeatedly asked us all to come up and visit. So we are. We’ll be camping in their backyard and using their facilities and cooking all together. And did I mention my parents and brother and his family are coming too! This helps us make do too because there are so many wonderful sight seeing opportunities in the U.P. that cost nothing or next to it. We’re planning on visiting a few waterfalls and perhaps Pictured Rocks. And of course, we get to go over the Mackinac Bridge. Plus don’t forget all those light houses . . . . we’ll be staying a block or so from Lake Michigan and are planning on catching some *free* sunsets.
Coming up next: Do without!

Year of Abundance: Wear it out

6:48 PM, 2007-Aug-28 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 0 comments .. Link

Continuing with my latest posts on our Year of Abundance . . . .
[Go here for Use it up!]
Wear it out- well, we’re good at this one when it comes to clothes. For Mr. Steady- any shirt or pants or socks too old or worn to be used for  good become work clothes when they are too far gone for work clothes they go into the rag bag or as mostly happens- the item is thrown away because Mr. Steady has truly worn it out! We aren’t able to pass down clothes with the girls right now because both the girls are wearing the same size but we are able to share with others. We have passed down our gently used clothes to others and been blessed ourselves with the passing down of gently used clothes.  Some items have been repurposed- for example: useless panty hose has been cut into strips to hold up plants in the garden, stained cotton t-shirts have been stitched into wash cloths (and used to wash those horrid muddy dirty feet at the back door- no tramping that in the house!).
Around the house it’s all about repairs and using tools and toys and such until you just can’t squeeze one more use from it. Leftovers (with the exception of meat) gone bad become compost as do coffee grounds and egg shells and grass/weed clippings.
I have even used broken china in my garden- I have a lovely little flowered dish that was broken and re-glued that is nestled with the flowers and is useful for giving the birdies a bit of a drink. Broken/chipped plates can be turned on their side and partially buried in the dirt to provide a beautiful border. Maiden has repurposed a few bits of this and that for her fairy garden. Mr. Conductor and I turned a broken terra cotta pot into a toad abode.
Coming Next: Make it do!

Yes, it's a YEAR of Abundance

6:22 PM, 2007-Aug-28 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 0 comments .. Link
Way back in January, I joined the Celebrate A Year of Abundance graciously hosted by Sallie @ A Gracious Home. I joined- wanting to make this a year of celebrating (and using) what I have. Little did I know when I made that commitment back in January what challenges we would face financially this year and how I would again and again be brought back to the reminder of the abundance God has given us.
In the midst of all our financial hardship, God has shown us again and again that He provides for and watches over us.  And so- thinking on that, it hasn’t been that much of a hardship . . . . when you can look back and see how God has carried you through.
Thinking on the phrase that is the motto of Year of Abundance, “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”, I realize I’ve been doing just that without really trying.
Use it up- well, right now we are eating from the pantry and freezer in order to squeeze out a few more dollars for an upcoming mini-vacation. We have also been using up the garden produce as well as sharing our abundance of produce! We’ve shared with friends and neighbors and co-workers and in some cases- we’ve received dozens of ears of corn, farm fresh eggs and even a jar of jam. We’ve frozen some of the harvest and some u-pick harvest too (blueberries and strawberries).
We’ve also made use of reclaimed wood (from pallets Mr. Steady brings home from work) to make raised garden beds, fix my rose trellis, make garden stakes & cages for tomatoes and miscellaneous home repairs.
Leftovers and garden clipping added to our compost and part of a felled tree, as well as many branches that have blown down in storms, have been used to replenish our stack of wood for our fire pit.
Five gallon buckets lined up under the carriage barn’s roof edge catch rain to be used to water the gardens. Mr. Steady gets his worms for fishing from the compost pile.
A set of doors marked free for the taking were brought home by Mr. Steady to replace a broken and unused door on the back of the house. Other roadside freebies have been used- bricks for the path in the garden and cement decorative edging for marking the edges of Mr. Steady’s veggie patch.
We have shopped resale (i.e. Goodwill) for all the kids clothes so far this year and for Mr. Steady too. I have had to purchase a couple of things “new” but have made sure the items were on sale or clearance.
Coming Next: Wear it out!

Loving thoughts

Happy HEARTS Day!
As I look on my family with love and adoration fair to bursting in my heart I am reminded how blessed I am. And then it hits me- God loves me soooooo much that He has given all this to me! I do not deserve it- have done nothing to deserve it- (in fact, have done much NOT to deserve it) and yet He gives out of his abundant capacity to love to me and my family each and every moment of the day.
I am loved abundantly- by friends and family and most of all by my husband and my Savior. I am amazed, I am in awe, of my good fortune.
When we love abundantly we cannot help but want to shower those we adore with that love. And that is what God does for me each and every day. I also know that there have been times when God has had to show me "tough love" and those times have taught me and grown me also.
But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. Psalm 13:5
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:6

How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 36:7

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Proverbs 3:3

Floundered, faltered and Found

11:34 AM, 2007-Feb-9 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 4 comments .. Link
I’m floundering today. I’ve slipped into a bit for unbelief again. Just the other day Mr. Steady and I were discussing how God is working in our finances and though the road is steep and hard, He is quietly making a way for us to get out from our crippling debt. We reminisced about all the times God has made a way- how He has met our needs. We talked of how unexpected costs came into our lives and how God has always come through for us.
And then came today. A horrible official notice about a certain debt . . . [I cannot go into all the details nor do I wish to but suffice it to say that we are not deadbeats] but I crumpled. I faltered.
My heart and mind didn’t automatically go to a peaceful place, nor was my first thought “God will make a way.” In all honestly I was thinking, “Oh, Lord, now what!?! How is this possible? What is going to happen? We are trying so hard.”
I was in the middle of schooling the girls when I opened the mail and then my first reaction was to bark at them about their work. My heart quickly went into panic mode and my mind went to despair and plain ol’ orneriness towards those I love most. How utterly ugly.
My mind is still whirring and I am ashamed. I was tested and I faltered. I know I serve an awesome God who can do impossible things. I know He is good all the time.
My problem lies in me. I made our financial mess and so I feel that I must continually suffer the consequences of it. And in doing so, in having this mindset- I have to wonder if I am missing out on blessings the Lord puts before me that I am too blind to see?
I am aware of the miracles he performs in our finances all the time but yet I still continue to doubt. In the back of my head I’m scared that there will come a bill or such and God will choose not to provide. I realize that I am standing on shaky ground. I realize that God has never NOT provided and yet I still mistrust. Why? Because I feel I deserve to be continually punished for the wrong I committed. How utterly and failingly human of me.
You know, I deserve every punishment and more and I do NOT deserve God’s grace and mercy yet He pours it out on me continually. I am reminded of a favorite quote of mine- Nothing you will ever do will cause God to love you more; nothing you will ever do will cause Him to love you less [Lewis Sperry-Chafer].
God does not desire to punish me- the only one punishing me is me and I get the feeling that when I do this it greatly saddens God. Today I felt that He was saying to me, saying straight to my battered heart and clouded mind, “Amy, don’t you trust me to get you through this? Haven’t I brought you safe thus far? I have forgiven you and you have been redeemed. Why would I plan for bad to come from this? When are you going to learn that I am not punishing you through this trial but teaching and leading you? Did you stop to think that perhaps this notice was a reminder to you that I am in charge of this? That you cannot go it alone? Your finances don’t belong to you- never have, never will. All you have, I have given. I am more than enough.”
I couldn’t not share this revelation today. Perhaps someone is struggling like me and needs to be reminded like me. But more importantly I need to write these things down to remind myself of how far the Lord has led me. To be reminded that He and He alone is in control.
Some days I walk quietly as a Christian and other days I am loud and obnoxious and faltering in my walk. The only real difference in my life from a non-Christian is that I am forgiven.
I am reminded of the faith story God is building in my life through this trial. I know I am better; I am stronger, because of it.
And I cry out, “I believe! Help my unbelief!!!”
I am no longer floundering- God has set my feet on solid ground.
I am more than thankful. I am more than grateful.
I am completely humbled.
God gives and He give to me abundantly.

Wonderful Gift

6:13 PM, 2007-Jan-23 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 0 comments .. Link

My Niece and Maiden’s bestest of the best friend, E, turned 10 today. I wanted to do something special for this special niece to mark such a special birthday. She and Maiden like/love the same things and both have really been bathing beauties (Maiden is now known for half hour plus soaks!) and are into spa treatments. So that’s what I did. I made E her own spa bag. I purchased some packets of spa treatments at Wal-mart for 88 cents (for hair, face and feet) added a nail brush and 2 of those little foam toe separators (do these have a real name?) that I picked up at a dollar store and had in my gift closet and topped it off with a itty bitty bottle of nail polish and a handmade (knit by me, the aunt) washcloth in her favorite colors.
I was thrilled to see how excited E got about the gift. I love it when I get it right and give a gift that is really, really just perfectly fit for that individual. So I’ve made note of this and will replenish my stash of spa stuff in my gift closet for the future. Oh and by the way- the entire gift cost under $5- gotta love that!
So this I add to my Year of Abundance. This was abundant giving at its best- from the heart more than the wallet! Lovely!
And while I’m thinking of it- this would be a great gift to give to a new or expecting mom . . . heck- this is a great gift for ANY mom!

Found a treasure at home

4:24 PM, 2007-Jan-22 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 1 comments .. Link

It just so happened that I was digging through my linen closet today looking for a lost pillow case when I happened upon an old table cloth that I had completely forgotten about.
Here's the table cloth on my kitchen table with our primroses (each girl bought one and then I bought one for myself $2 each). It's in need of ironing but I wanted to quick put it on to see if it would fit the table.

I found the cloth years ago at Goodwill for $1.50. It has a light stain on it that I've never been able to get out but it hasn't stopped me from enjoying it over the years. I admit it got buried in the nether regions of my linen closet because of me not wanting to have it out with small children. But today it hit me- what use is this to me if I don't put it out and enjoy it?
I mean, it's not perfect, it's already got a stain on it! What horrible harm can the kids do to it? And I need to remember that I did only pay $1.50 for the thing!
So here is an addition to my Year of Abundance . . . . . a beautiful table cloth to be enjoyed by all and some lovely little flowers to boot!

Abundance found second hand

2:09 PM, 2007-Jan-15 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 4 comments .. Link

Celebrating abundance by being frugal when it comes to clothing purchases . . . . .

I try to avoid shopping- other than groceries. For the obvious reason that it causes me to spend money! :o) However, we met my sil at the local Goodwill on Saturday to pick up our girls and Mr. Steady wanted to pop in to see about some new jeans for work and also to find another pair for me as he’s concerned about the dwindling amount of decent jeans in my dresser drawers! Isn’t he thoughtful?!
Well, he found 2 pairs ($3.99 each), I found one pair plus a nice pair of jean shorts (not too short- about 2 inches above the knee which are hard to find! $4.99 each- hey why are my jeans more expensive than his??? Anyhoo it was worth buying ahead . . . .)
Got Mr. Conductor a fleece hoodie with sweatshirt lining inside ($2.99). A long torso striped sweater and long sleeve, long torso polo shirt for Sassafras ($2.99 and $3.99 respectively) which will help with those blue jeans that her Gram bought her that can’t seem to stay up . . . . . even with a belt! Oh and I didn’t forget Maiden- a very nice magenta hoodie and beautiful blue eyelet blouse ($2.99 and $3.99). I could have bought more but I resisted. I work hard not to purchase something unnecessarily just because it’s a great deal! In fact, the purchases for Mr. Steady, Sassafras and myself were quite necessary as was the blouse for Maiden. Mr. Conductor could have lived just fine without the fleece- however it will come in quite handy with layering for colder temps (and to be completely honest I didn’t want to leave him out!).
We are due to go thru dressers again- pulling out what doesn’t fit and making lists. Maiden has shot up and rounded out in the middle- we’ve already set aside 3 pairs of jeans/pants that are too tight or too short and passed yet another pair down to Sassafras. Speaking of Sass- she’s outgrown at least 3 shirts, 2 sweaters and ruined another sweater plus a pair of blue jeans. Not to worry as Gram has filled in some of the gaps for her.
One other way I make do here is purchasing a couple of solid colored long sleeve long torso t-shirts (one in white and the other in a color each girl wears often). I then have the  girls layer these long sleeve shirts under short sleeve T-shirts—effectively enlarging our wardrobe choices and getting more wear from T-shirts that will soon be completely outgrown.
Maiden is petite for her age as well as long legged. Sassafras is tall for her age and long torso-ed so passing down clothing isn’t always an option. They wear the same size in shirts and dresses. Sometimes though the clothes that will fit one girl well won’t work on the other so we can’t swap much here. Obviously second hand is the way to go!
In the past, I have gone thru our clothing separating piles for resale, give away and toss. I would take a large quantity of clothing to a local consignment shop where I could get (50% consignment) $$ for my clothing. The money this generated would then be put towards purchasing needed clothing for the kiddos. Rarely would I need to dip into the coffers to purchase clothing so this system has worked great for us for years. Unfortunately, the consignment shop has closed as have at least 3 other local consignment shops within the past six months.
Now what do I do? I'm not too sure about eBay and if its worth it or not . . . .

Vampires

9:59 PM, 2007-Jan-13 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 1 comments .. Link
Vampire Electric Use. Oh, the term intrigues me! Sucking the electical "life-blood" and cash right from our pockets without us even being aware! Appliances and gadgets such as microwaves, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, computers etc. all continue to use electricity even when off or not in use. Power strips also use vampire electric. So you need to remember to turn off your power strip too! I can already think of at least 10 such items in our home that use this. I must admit that we do not turn everything off- my coffee pot has a timer so that I wake up to piping hot brew (a weakness) and we like to leave the microwave on because we use the clock on it. And I gotta admit it's a pain to have to reprogram  the VCR after it's been turned off . . . . . But when we think of all these different items, all plugged in, all sucking electrical juice while on stand-by . . . . . one has to wonder about the co$t.
As to the blue jeans- do we not want to dry them because it wears them out faster? I have to say I get annoyed that it takes a couple of days to dry  them and then they seem so stiff . . . . And I'm cheap- I only own 3 decent pairs of blue jeans (plus the two ragged, stained pair I use for gardening/painting/home repair that I would never wear anywhere but home!). In fact, I now own 3 decent pair because Mr. Steady and I went to Goodwill today and I found a great pair that actually fit ($4.99 ). Before this it was "wear one, wash one". I love my blue jeans. I live in my blue jeans.

Drying out

10:48 AM, 2007-Jan-13 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 4 comments .. Link
Lynne posted a great comment on my last entry about how she uses floor dryers to dry clothes. She also has some very interesting info on how many Europeans don't use dryers plus the higher cost of electricity overseas . . . . (we sure are spoiled here aren't we!?!)
I have 3 indoor clothes lines in my laundry room where I hang many clothes. I have to say we use our dryer approx. 50% of the time and I always dry jeans in the dryer because that's the way Mr. Steady and I like them.
I also wash some loads (except undergarments or sheets) in cold water. Our washer and dryer are only 2 years old and are energy saver models. I was amazed at the drop in our electric bill after we replaced our 20+ year old washer, dryer and freezer with new energy saver/effecient models (an approx. drop of about $5 per month). Plus the new washer uses less detergent and less water and is much more gentle on our clothes.
It is my goal to hang more and dry less this year. I think it would be great to get a floor dryer as Lynne mentioned (we've always called them drying racks- my mom has one) to help as I need a bit more drying space.
Thanks Lynne for commenting/sharing!

Some of our Abundance

1:23 PM, 2007-Jan-12 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 1 comments .. Link
I've been thinking more about this Year of Abundance and how/what to implement in my life.
One thing we are trying to be more aware of here at home is electricity- especially lights.
I have a tendence to leave certain lights on all day long. Yikes. We also weren't doing well about turning off lights in rooms no one is in. For example: we'd all be in the kitchen eating supper and left 2 lamps on in the living room and the hall light on. I've always been one to turn all the living room lamps on and the kitchen light (it's got 6 bulbs in it!) when it begins to get dark and leave them all on until bed time.
We are slowly changing our way of thinking and have implemented a family fine of 10 cents for every light left on. If a light is left in for a long time the fine goes up- for example: Maiden left the garage light on all afternoon (about 3 hours) and was charged 35 cents.
We have also begun to purchase those new long lasting, energy saving light bulbs and are very pleased . (one note: we have found we can't put them in our lighted ceiling fan as the friction/movement of the fan makes the bulb burn out fast). These bulbs are especially great for bedrooms and bathrooms because when first turned on they are dimmer [than their full wattage] and then warm up to full light- great for adjusting your bleary eyes!

A year of abundance

2:03 PM, 2007-Jan-10 .. Posted in A Year of Abundance .. 2 comments .. Link

This post by Sallie over at A Gracious Home got me thinking- which then got me praying . . . .
And I am thinking and praying that I too must see 2007 as a
Year of Abundance and I too will be challenging myself to live more frugally (and we live mighty frugal here!) and mostly live by a motto I have always loved:
Use it up
Wear it out
Make it do
Or do without!

Sallie sums up what I want to do with this: "This saying is already a part of my life in many ways, but I know I can do a much better job. And I would also enjoy the feeling of being a good steward of using the things I already have in my home rather than bringing more home to add to the stash. I also want to focus on the spiritual and relational abundance I have and how that comes into play with the material abundance." This is my heart too. This is what I want to challenge myself with for 2007.
So I'm going to try and trim my grocery bill even lower. I'm going to try to purchase second hand before buying new and I'm going to challenge myself mightly not to buy new unless it is absolutely necessary (like underwear! LOL). I'm going to give freely of my abundance (such as outgrown clothes to a friend in need or our local free store). I want any redecorating/remodeling we do here at home to be as frugal as possible.
And I'm going to try to keep track of this Year of Abundance right here. Hopefully being help accountable will keep me on track!
Sallie has set up a link for the many individuals that want to join her in Celebrating A Year of Abundance.
