Home Sweet Simple Home

It spoke to this ol' rock-picker's heart and soul

Next week I will be posting my annual weekly series that gives you a glimpse into a week of homeschooling here at the homestead.

With that coming up, I’d also love to share that I have finally (I think) come up with a suitable name for our homeschool.

           Stones of Remembrance Homeschool

The name is based on Joshua 4:6 and my decidedly quirky love of rocks. My momma once told me I came from a long line of rock-pickers and I have passed that joy on to my children. But, of course, the name goes deeper-
Let’s look at Joshua 4 together— lets start at verse 2.
The LORD said to Joshua, “Now choose twelve men, one from each tribe. (v.3 )Tell them to take twelve stones from where the priests are standing in the middle of the Jordan and pile them up at the place where you camp tonight.
(v.4) So Joshua called together the twelve men (v.5) and told them, “Go into the middle of the Jordan, in front of the Ark of the LORD your God. Each of you must pick up one stone and carry it out on your shoulder—twelve stones in all, one for each of the twelve tribes. (v.6)
We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future, your children will ask, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ (v.7) Then you can tell them, ‘They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowering when the Ark of the LORD’s covenant went across.’ These stones will stand as a permanent memorial among the people of Israel.”
----- We will use these stones to build a memorial.
Each subject, each project and paper, each beloved book, each year is a stone of remembrance in our homeschool—building a firm foundation for each of my children’s futures. And a foundation for our family as well.
I have been praying for a suitable name for our little homeschool since before the actual beginning. A while back I read an interesting post by Kim Wolf that sited these verses- she had titled her post “Stones of Remembrance” and it really hit me because in my bible I have that exact phrase written down next to this text in Joshua (and again with this one “our stone of help”- 1 Samuel 7:2 and lets not forget Jacob’s stone in Genesis 28:18). I have made it a practice to look up and note verses about rocks and stones. Piles of stones were altars as well as memorials to what the Lord had done. These verses spoke to the heart of a tried and true rock-picker.
So I thought on them some more and prayed on it. I have rocks all over my home; rocks I've picked and rocks my children and husband have picked, a heart-shaped rocks and polished stones; rocks on the piano and buffet, propping open a door and on the sink next to the faucet. And they bring me joy just looking at them and remembering . . . . .
What better name for our homeschool than
Stones of Remembrance!

I think that is a wonderful name for your homeschool. I know that you have a heart that continues to remember what the Lord has done for you and your family.I continue to strive to remember also. He has done so much for me and has been so faithful to me and my family. Your blog continues to be such an encouragement to me. Love, Tina

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
