What was I thinking?

Thank you everyone for your encouragement and kind words. I normally have a pretty optimistic attitude about things but sometimes the worry wears on me. Mr. Steady and I talked that if it was someone else going thru this situation that I would shower them with words of affirmation and encouragement and I wouldn’t waver in my belief that God would bring good things to pass.
Since I wrote this post yesterday- God has taken the time to remind me again and again of how He has seen us through this crisis. Yes, in 2007 we took quite a few bad blows but I had quite simply forgotten how God led us through each and every one of those situations. Let’s look back on a few:
l First off all, since striving to be debt free and not only making a budget but sticking to it we have never missed or been late on another bill and more importantly we have never had to sacrifice our tithe. We have been able to write that tithe check each and every week. Amen.
l When the horrendous garnishment came in May ’07 and wiped out our entire savings and checking account- we had just enough cash money set aside to cover the overdrafts, pay our bills that week and make it to the next payday. And I mean just enough! Amen.
l We were able to work with the creditor that garnished us- setting up a very small monthly payment and they agreed to no more garnishments. Amen.
l Over the summer, we were able to, as a family, do some “caretaking” jobs for a couple who have a second home nearby- which then gave us the money to pay our car insurance and summer taxes (which was in the savings that was wiped out). Amen.
l We ordered our school curriculum 6 weeks earlier than planned (due to a sale)- if we had waited to order it when we had originally planned the garnishment would have taken it. Amen.
l When the car broke down it happened to be the same weekend we were having a yard sale and we made just enough money at the yard sale to pay for the repairs. Let me repeat- just enough! Amen.
l The caretaking job also helped us to have a bit of money to visit family in the U.P. -- a little vacation. Amen.
l When the little bit of money I had squirreled away for Mr. Steady and I to have a date had to go towards an unexpected expense- his company rewarded his hard work with a gift certificate to a local restaurant. The. Very. Next. Day. Amen.
l When the latest letter came in November from a creditor-  taking us to court- we made an appointment with a local lawyer- just to go over the letter and advise us was to be $50. We met with him- he helped us form a reply and gave us advice and waved the fee. Amen.
l We prayed about how to afford Christmas . . . . and a couple of weeks later someone sent us money anonymously to be specifically used for the children’s Christmas. Amen.
These are all very specific incidents of when bad things have come our way and God has made a way for us. How disappointing my latest response must have been to the Lord. He has not only shown Himself to be faithful but He has done it in a pretty timely manner. Many times this past year we stood at the brink- And He held on us- kept us from falling. I am quite ashamed that I forgot that all along He has been giving us good gifts.
Looking at this from a 180* perspective, that I only just acquired— I can see how He has again and again made a way for us. My mind was so warped by the struggling and uncertainty that I lost sight of how He has provided.
He has done many other wonderful things for us this past year- like my Momma, the Goodwill Shopping Queen, finding the exact clothing in the exact sizes that we needed- including the kidlets Christmas outfits- which seriously helped our severely depleted clothing budget. The week that I got the most excellent gas mileage we have ever gotten on our car just happened to be the same week we only had $10 available for gas. Amen.
Oh and there was the nice tidy rate reduction for our car insurance. Amen.
And while our summer taxes increased- our winter taxes decreased (we had budgeted an increase for both). Amen.
How about the simple fact that I have a part- time job that allows me to work from home and thereby allows me to homeschool our children- as we feel God had led us to do? Wow. Amen.
I am sure there will be more moments when the fear will get its clammy grip on me as we deal with the action taken against us. But I am purposing, right here and now, to choose to remain faithful and optimistic. I choose to continue to prepare for the rain. I will obviously need to revisit this post often to remind myself of how God has provided for us.

What is the price of five sparrows? A couple of pennies? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to Him than a whole flock of sparrows. ~Luke 12:6-7

The Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete. ~ Deuteronomy 16:15

Amy,
18 months is not that far to go! When I read your goal of 18 months, a thought struck me. Maybe I shouldn't even say it, as it may seem extremely negative, but it is not intended that way.
I have come to the belief that the US is headed for some really tough financial times....maybe, just maybe, God was getting you totally ready for this challenge to come by convicting you to get rid of your debt NOW.
18 months from now, with all of your new habits and money knowledge, you may be one of the best prepared to survive the downturn. You may also be in a position to relate to others who are suffering financially and be an empathetic role model. Maybe this was all for a reason.
I am afraid that things may be so bad that we will be in a depression in two years. In the last depression, the people who survived were those with very little debt, those able to do without and live frugally. Yes, this may have all been for a very good reason.

This is sweet. What a reminder of God's goodness.

By the way, I'm *sure* I would not do any better in the faith department when things like this come up. I'm actually encouraged when I look at the Israelites and their trip through the desert... how God carried them and sustained them... and they still whined the whole way!

Journaling and going over God's faithfulness to our needs builds up our faith! It reminds us that God never fails us!!! We aren't in the best financial shape, but we are (with lots of help from God) working our way our of debt! We are doing the Dave ramsey thing.......... We are down to the last year!!!!! PRAISE GOD for all the ways he has shown you his power!!!!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
