Home Sweet Simple Home

Use it up & Make it do!

Found this blog while wandering today . . . . I don’t sew and don’t believe I can commit to totally not buying any new clothing whatsoever for 6 months. But I enjoy the concept.
And while I think about it- I don’t buy much new. I do, however- draw the line when it comes to undergarments- those I ALWAYS buy new. Always. It’s a quirk of mine.
Looking back at last month and at this month’s wardrobe purchases- I purchased new: socks for the girls, panty hose/tights for the girls and myself, 3 prs of jeans- one for each kidlet (on sale for $6 a piece- you just can’t beat that!) and a new outfit for Maiden for her birthday ($12 for shirt and pants- again on sale). I still need to purchase a pair of jeans for Mr. Steady for Christmas and that will be a new purchase also. I notice that while I’ve bought new – I didn’t buy full retail- every item was on sale or clearance.
I must also mention that my mother, aka The Goodwill Shopping Queen, has overloaded us with goodies- boots for all 3 kids, winter coat & snow pants plus shirts and skirts for Maiden, a few shirts and 2 beautiful fancy dresses for Sassafras and many shirts, sweaters and dress shirts for Mr. Conductor. As well as a top for me.
As a rule I am a frugal shopper. I try to help my family take good care of their clothing (Sassafras’s pants are a major exception to this- it’s beyond explanation). I use to take outgrown clothing to a local consignment shop and use the money I earned for our clothing purchases. This was quite handy and I didn’t have to have clothing budget- but, alas, like other itty bitty businesses in Michigan- it closed. Instead of selling on some site or such or trying to another resale shop- I've given much of our gently used clothing away this year. I am reminded that as I am blessed so can I, in turn, bless others. While it would be extremely helpful in our current financial situation to resell the clothing- it isn't an absolute true necessity. We can survive. I can budget for clothing purchases and make do.
Make me a blessing to someone today, Lord.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
