YM- Part 2: My Answer

If you have not read this post on How I Got Into Youth Ministry- please read it first as this is the 2nd post- a continuation . . . . .
My first reaction was an automatic no. I was the mother of 2 young girls and I held an associates degree in journalism. I didn’t know how to be a youth pastor. I had no formal training. My pastor encouraged me to pray about it and told me that the training could be taught but the natural love, enthusiasm and dedication I already possessed for youth ministry could not be. He went on to say that he’d much rather hire the enthusiasm and love for youth than a degree. He also said that the church would help pay for any schooling I would pursue for youth ministry. It would be a part-time position, 20 hours/week and I could work from home.
Mr. Steady and I discussed it at length and prayed about it even more. It was difficult for us to wrap our minds around the church paying me for this. We asked for more time to pray on it and informed our families of what was going on and asked them to pray also.
During this time, we took the youth group to a two day youth conference. While at the conference there was a special separate meeting for youth leaders which I decided to attend. During the worship segment of the meeting I heard the Lord whisper to my heart- calling me to accept the position. It was an incredible moment and I had such sure peace.
God has led me through so much in youth ministry and reaffirmed the call in me twice more. There have been some extremely rocky periods and times when I very much wanted to walk away- but I knew that if God called me to it He would also be the one to call me away from it.
That was 5.5 years ago. During that time, due to financial constraints both in the church and personally, plus scheduling problems, I have not been able to take classes. BUT I have not stopped learning. I have attended 3 major week long youth worker conferences, plus 4 day long seminars and have an extensive library of youth leadership materials that I have read over and over. I found a mentor (our church district youth ministry trainer) who encouraged and stretched me and attended church district youth pastor training classes.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
