Home Sweet Simple Home

Lessons in Hospitality.

On our way to deliver the meal to my friend and her little family, the girls and I discussed what hospitality is. Maiden contributed the most to the conversation and Sassafras listened intently.
Maiden concluded that hospitality is doing things for others (acts of service- the term we use instead of chores here at home) with love and expecting nothing in return. We discussed that hospitality begins at home- we must show hospitality to our family. I asked the girls different ways each of us in the family shows hospitality at home. Great discussion there! (examples: giving up the best seat on the couch, making lunch for the family, doing someone else's job- they went on to be very person specific about each of us in the family). We then talked about different ways we show hospitality to others- wow, did the girls come up with some good ones (examples: opening doors for others, taking care of someone else’s cart at the store, picking up trash we see while on walks . . . .)
I then said to the girls, “Hospitality is like entertaining but it’s also so much more. What do I mean by that?” The girls just looked at me- so then I said, “What is the difference between hospitality and entertaining?”
Entertaining involves many of the components of hospitality but is more about pride and showing off what you have or what you can do and it lacks a major component of hospitality- love. Hospitality is doing acts of service, be they big or small, with love and with care and thoughtfulness. I shared a couple of examples with my girls: My grandmother was all about entertaining— putting together beautiful fancy dinners etc. to impress others (and receive many compliments) while my dear friend Tam is all about hospitality. Tam doesn’t care if her house isn’t just so yet she always makes a special yummy snack/dessert for whenever we visit. She saves her special flavored coffees to make when her friends pop over. When you share a prayer request with her, she doesn’t just say “I’ll pray about that for you,” she stops right then and there and prays with you! Tam is always quick to lend a helping hand whenever needed, whether it’s helping someone move and unpack or watching your kids so you can go to the grocery store by yourself. Tam oozes hospitality.
Maiden: “You can entertain without love for people but hospitality is about giving love.”
Bingo.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
