Hospitality begins at Home

It just so happens that I will be delivering meals to friends and family tonight and tomorrow evenings. I really don’t have the time to squeeze in a trip to the grocery store between now and then and so am trying to be creative.

I am also reminded of a story from Elizabeth George’s A Woman After God’s Own Heart . . . the topic was hospitality and the fact that it needed to begin at home. Mrs. George shared a story of when she was a young mother. She had spent a whole day prepping and cooking the most amazing delicious meal for “Mrs. X” and family in their church, since Mrs. X had just had a baby. Her children salivated over it all as she was fixing it and asked if that was what they were having for supper. The mother informed the children that no, the food was for a family in their church. The children’s response was “what are we having for dinner?” Mom’s response, “Macaroni and cheese and hot dogs”. Mrs. George used the story to illustrate that hospitality begins at home- don’t serve your family mac-n-cheese and others the cream of the crop. Listen to what Mrs. George says, “I had put someone else, Mrs. X, ahead of my own family. I had gone many extra miles to make the meal I was taking to someone I had never met but was throwing together something quick and easy for my own husband and children. In short, I was giving something to someone else that I had not first given to the people closest to me!”
Ministry begins at home- treat your family with the care you so often reserve for others. I took this admonishment to heart- those that know me well have learned to not be surprised when I bring a dessert to something and it’s missing a couple of good sized portions. Serve your family first- if I don’t make an identical dessert for my family, I have learned to not be embarrassed at taking a bit of what I’m bringing.
And so--- what shall I cook?
Well, I have some left over Rosemary Garlic bread in the freezer that really didn’t appeal to my little clan. I had planned to try and make croutons out of it but I believe it would go quite well with the soup I had planned for my family this evening. I am going to double the recipe so that I can take some along with the bread to my brother and his family.
As for tomorrow night- I plan to stick with our family campfire nite and our pizza camp pies but will be making this delicious dish for my dear friend and her family. I will add a tossed salad with all the fixings (including dressing) and homemade bread as side dishes and cream cheese brownies as dessert.
My girls will be helping me make the meals and will likely go with me to deliver tomorrow night’s meal. While we are cooking and baking, I will take the opportunity to explain hospitality and why it is important. I also plan on discussing the necessity of practicing hospitality at home first and foremost.

When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. Romans 12:13

I guess you recommend the book "A Woman After God's Own Heart". I have been eyeballing that book in the CBD catalog for some time now, guess I will have to move it up higher onto my wishlist.

THanks for sharing!

Oh yes! I wholeheartedly recommend the book and don't forget to purchase the study guide to take you even deeper! I also recommend another of her book/study guide combos "A Wife After God's Own Heart". Very, very good.
Both of these books changed my perspective and got me on track.
Buy it!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
