The Ultimate Gift

Yesterday evening I had the opportunity for a Mom’s Nite Out. My MOPS group hosted a movie nite. Our movie- The Ultimate Gift (based on a book of the same name).
I knew I was in for it when there were a dozen ladies and my friend had 5 boxes of Kleenex sitting out. Oh, dear- a tear-jerker. I haven’t been in the mood to watch a tear-jerker movie lately- I’ve had enough tears in my life thankyouverymuch, but I was already there and so I resigned myself to watching it.
So how was it? It was a truly wonderful and very touching movie and yes, I cried but I also laughed, a lot. And laughing along with crying is good, very good.
Would I recommend this movie? Oh, yes and YES again.
The main character, a young man, is given 12 gifts posthumously by his grandfather (who he detests by the way). The 12 gifts are not what he expected them to be- not what he wanted- but what he needed. As I watched the movie I thought of how those 12 gifts have played out in areas of my life. I really got to thinking about the gift of problems.
Do you see that as a gift? Until the last couple of years, I didn’t. Yet God has shown me the blessings in the midst of trials and given me the hindsight to see how my life has been shaped by the gift of problems. For one thing, problems have taught me empathy. Problems have also helped me develop character. (Oh, how I use to detest it when my mom used that phrase on me!) While I doubt I will ever say to God, “Bring on the problems Lord, I need more,” I have learned to look for the lesson, the blessing, the gift, in the midst of it all. Sometimes the gift is readily apparent, other times I can’t see it until I am past the problem (way past the problem). As I think back to the problems, the hurts and pains and trials in my life- I can’t think of a single one that didn’t have a gift in it- even the passing of a loved one brings the reminder that life should be cherished and treasured greatly each day. The problems with family can offer the gifts of grace and mercy or taking note of “what not to do” or the gifts of patience and perseverance. In fact, lots of problems bring with them the gifts of patience and perseverance. I know I am always in need of those two particular gifts.
So- what comes to mind when you think of the gift of problems?

Thanks for the sweet comment on my blog. You're so funny...YES...you WILL enjoy those Jr./Sr. High homeschool years! You'll be so surprised.

About "the gift." Like you, sometimes it is WAY after things have happened that I recognize it as a gift. But some things I know I will never understand the purpose of until I'm in the arms of my sweet Savior. Like the death of our 1st dd and 2 miscarriages. Those things tug at my heart.

Blessings from Ohio, Kim Wolf<><

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
