Home Sweet Simple Home

On Vacation and Back

I have to say that I’d rather be sick at home than sick on vacation. Wouldn’t everyone? Just thinking of the money you spend to be miserable somewhere far away from your comfiest jammies, cozy bed and all the comforts of home . . . . .
and I was in a tent.
I’ve been fighting sinuses and allergies for a good portion of the summer- every summer for a long long time. This year it has been especially bad- in August with all the harvesting and such after the dry spell and then the torrential downpours. The ragweed around here has been gigantic. All in all, I thought I was just suffering my normal summer allergies.
We were a day into our trip when I began to feel it and the 2nd day I was completely laid up- as in “lay-in-bed-don’t-move-a-muscle-lest-a-stabbing-pain-assail-you”. I remember laying there hurting so much- too much to sleep, too much to talk, too much to read- just hurting. Too. Much. And so I prayed. And prayed and prayed.
I won’t give the blow-by-blows but it was pretty miserable there for awhile. Thanks to Mr. Steady and other family members my children had a fun filled time. They went to the beach and the ice cream shop and to a lighthouse, and back to the beach, and back to the ice cream shop . . . . hikes and star gazing, smores and other good ol’ campfire food. They didn’t suffer but they were concerned about mama. Mr. Steady was tremendous (did I mention that yet?). He had the brunt of caring for the kiddos- which isn’t that much except for Mr. Conductor and the potty thing  . . . . . which went remarkably well, all things considered. The most difficult was caring for me- as he just didn’t know what he could do to help me get better. He spent a lot of time just holding me. And that was okay.
By the end of the vacation- my family had plied me with so many o.c. meds and such that I wasn’t sure if it was the sinuses or that making me so muddle-fuddled.
We said good-bye to our Escanaba, MI family on Tuesday morning and set off in a drizzling rain for the Mighty Mac. My dad shared a surprise with my little family- he was taking us to tour the Fort. After lunch at Scallywags- which I thankfully could actually taste! I hadn’t toured the fort in 14 years and (therefore) the kiddos had never been. FYI: Fort Michilimackinac is the longest operating archeological dig site. We watched the musket loading and cannon demos and ate zucchini bread cooked right in a kettle by a lady dressed in period garb. My kiddos seemed to be the only littles about and so Mr. Conductor took the opportunity to run everywhere like a mad man. A good stretch of the legs- he napped quite well in the car after!
We arrived home Wednesday evening- unpacked and unpacked some more and stored the camping gear and threw in the first of 3 loads of laundry (what- only 3?) . . . . I ate a bowl of cereal for supper as I wasn’t up to much more than that . . . .
Thursday was the kick-off for our homeschool group and I was the unofficial ex-officio- hmph?- I was “in charge”. I was also a bit late as I had to stop at the local pharmacy to stock up on more meds and a couple large boxes of extra soft, lotion added tissue for my nosey. The day wore me out and so I didn’t even touch the computer until Friday . . . .
and that’s when I had to slog thru all the emails and youth paperwork . . . .
And so ends the saga of my 2 sporadic weeks here . . . . I’m still not my “normal self“ yet but plan to be “right as rain” as soon as possible. I have missed checking in and am sure I’ll never catch up on all the blog reading from when I was gone . . . .

Amy,
Sorry to hear you are feeling bad. Unfortunately, if you have a sinus infection, it is probably going to require a trip to the MD for a prescription antibiotic. Hope you get better soon.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
