3 years for stealing TP

Lynne recently asked me "I was wondering what your opinion is, from a biblical perspective, on all this Paris Hilton hoopla?"
Well, Lynne- right now I doubt this is a clearly biblical perspective but I have to say right off- that I personally feel she has gotten away with a lot because of her "celebrity status". Yesterday evening I was watching our local news and they ran a segment about a woman who stole 3 rolls of toilet paper from the county courthouse where she worked and was looking at 3 years in jail (each roll of TP was considered a separate offense. 1 year per roll-- they've dubbed it "The Great Toilet Paper Caper"). While I did find this funny and unbelievable I couldn't help but think that Ms. Hilton is getting off lightly for a far more serious offense. Granted one should not pilfer TP but taking toilet paper is not libel to harm someone as driving drunk is. Plain and simple.
Now- my Grandpappy always liked to say that "Wrong is wrong if everybody's doing it and wrong is wrong if nobody's doing it." Stealing toilet paper is wrong and if the judge decides on a full sentence of 3 years in jail then so be it- she stole something that didn't belong to her- harsh yes but she had to have known that stealing TP just wasn't the right thing to do- period.
Just as I believe Ms. Hilton has enough knowledge to know right from wrong. I am reminded of how children will continue to do something wrong- even when they know it's wrong- as long as they can get away with it- until they are stopped and punished for it. It seems, in my humble opinion, that this young woman is going to continue to do whatever she can get away with until someone tells her "No. That's not right."
While I can't believe someone would actually get 3 years jail time for stealing toilet paper and someone who drives drunk would not see a day in jail- and I think to myself, "where's the justice in that?" Both parties knowingly and willfully did wrong. Both should be held accountable for their actions- period.
**Updated to Add**: Sally at A Gracious Home has writtena lovely post concerning Paris Hilton- please read it.

I am amazed at how much Ms. Hilton is getting from the media! It is crazy but you are 100% correct. Wrong is still wrong. God does not give sins a point value. Little white lies are still lies and just as bad as big fat whopper lies. Ms. Hilton needs to be taught a lesson and pay for her crimes as does the tp lady. The punishment needs to fit the crime though. The two should switch punishments. Anybody else looking to the east expectantly??????
