Mr. Conductor on Maundy Thursday

Yesterday evening was a special Maundy Thursday communion service at our church. We went as a family. I didn’t bring anything for Mr. Conductor to play with etc. – I really thought he’d be okay. Well, he was in the beginning. Sitting with a hymnal on his lap and “singing” along with the rest of us. Then his Nana gave him some gum and that kept him occupied for a bit then his cousin J snuck under the pew to join him and they started getting a bit rowdy. But really, I’m not writing to tell how things went wrong but what he “got right”.
We watched the portion of the Jesus film showing the Last Supper and Jesus praying in the garden. While Jesus was breaking the bread and sharing with the disciples, Mr. Conductor leaned forward and told his aunt “They’re giving testament.” Then when we went forward for communion, I explained to him that he wouldn’t be having any because he was too little and didn’t understand. He got a bit upset with me. When Pastor passed the wafers and spoke of the body of Christ, he wanted one too and I again told him “No”. He then looked at Pastor, then me and then his aunt and stated quietly, “I want a body. Where’s my part of the body?” I then again gently reminded him that this was something special for when he was older. He gave me a stern look and firmly stated, “I’m gonna talk to God.”
He didn’t try to grab anything from me, or upset the tray as it was passed. He didn’t yell or scream or pitch a fit and he stayed in his spot right next to me watching it all. He just said, “I’m gonna talk to God.”
At first I was frustrated because I hadn’t been able to concentrate and really hear the special service and a bit put off by his behavior and I said as much to my father. My father gently said that Mr. Conductor made it special in his own way. And then Mr. Steady piped up to say that Mr. Conductor was really paying attention- more so than we often give him credit for.
And that got me to thinking- we, Mr. Steady and I, daily live for Christ right in front of our children. We make a point of having personal devotions, learning scripture, having family devotions and listening to and singing praise and worship songs. We readily thank God for the blessings he gives and go to him in prayer for everything. I have always wanted the Lord to be a real daily part of my children’s lives in an all consuming way. And often I have wondered if we were managing it. Last night God showed me that we were.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
