Home Sweet Simple Home

Violets in water

Tuesday afternoon (our last nice day outside), Sassafras picked oodles upon oodles of tiny violets out of the yard. She brought them to the kitchen, cupped them in her T-shirt and shook them out all over the kitchen table. Such beautiful little blooms- but mostly just flower heads. The stems that were there weren’t long enough or sturdy enough to place in a little violet vase. The gift was so sweet and I wanted to enjoy them- so I grabbed a shallow glass bowl from the cupboard and placed all the violet heads in it and added a bit of water to float them in. It was quite pretty as our centerpiece as we dined that evening.
Yesterday morning, I noticed the little flowers were already looking limp and lifeless and since we were on our way out the door for errand running, I set the bowl on the counter by the sink to remind myself to take care of it.
Well, I didn’t take care of it until yesterday evening and as I picked up the bowl I noticed the most lovely faint scent of violets. Of course, it made me smile but then I wondered . . . . . I strained the violets from the water and placed the water in one of my old glass apothecary bottles. I sniffed the water and sure enough- the water still smelled of violets! How lovely. Sassafras and I made (very diluted) violet water!
So- what can I do with this? I know that the process of making this for real is a lot more complicated and takes more time. But Sass and I are so thrilled with our little “science experiment” and want to use it in some way. Could we use it as ironing water? Would the smell stay?
Well, even if nothing comes of it- it was a beautiful little centerpiece and is still offering up a most pleasant smell from the little glass bottle (Sass sniffs it in the morning).

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
