More Q and A

  More Q and A for inquiring minds . . . . .
Q: Do your children have gym/Phys. Ed?
A: My children are very active and when weather permits they are outside playing after school is done. We have a Tae Bo for Kids work-out video that we love to do together (wears Mama out fast!) and we also like to shake our sillies out to some good thumpin’ music. We ride bikes, hike and take walks together (walking and hiking are different!). My children help with the gardening and yard work as well. When the girls were in public school they had gym a maximum of 2 days per week (about 40 minutes each time) so I’d have to say we probably get in more Phys. Ed than that. Sassafras also is known to take stretching breaks from her seatwork- going through her own stretching and active exercises. Mr. Conductor often joins in . . . . Maiden sometimes, but not as often.
Q: The BIG question: What about socialization?
A: Now here I could go into a whole spiel about what socialization actually means and what kids actually get for “socialization” in public schools. But if you’re asking if I keep my kids at home and inside never to interact with another human being besides each other and their parents- I’d have to say NO! We attend church and interact with all age levels (different church programs, get-togethers and Sunday School classes as well as vacation bible school) and the girls are involved in Caravan (our denomination’s scouting program- meets once a week during the school year). We meet once a week with our homeschool group (10 families with a total of 25 children- age range: 2 to 12) for a full day together with activities, lunch and unit studies. More often than not my children are kind and courteous when we are out and about. They do not have problems holding conversations with people of all ages and are very articulate and well mannered for their ages (compared with their peer groups). They have wonderful friendships and often have friends over to our home or are invited to spend time at their friends’ homes. As far as I see it- the only socialization they are not exposed to on a frequent basis is the “negative” kind- bullies and such other negative influences. Here’s where I’ve failed- they don’t know the hottest TV and movie stars, or the number one music videos. They don’t know the top 10 songs or the latest gaming craze. They can’t sing along with a pop song. They don’t know what the latest fashion trend is, nor do they particularly care. They aren’t really aware of the hottest toys nor do they bug me incessantly to purchase any. And when I look at it that way- I’m glad we aren’t “socialized”. I think we too often get caught up in the “socialization” question when what really matters, is whether or not your children act civilized. Isn’t that the underlying meaning? Doesn’t it matter more that a 10 year old can carry on a conversation with an adult, speaking articulately and acting well-mannered and showing a genuine interest in what is being discussed than whether or not she knows what the proper fashion for blue jeans is right now and who to root for on American Idol? My child does the former but not the latter- is she socially backwards? Um, sorry got on my high horse there for a minute. Ahem.
Q: Do your children miss public school? Do your children enjoy homeschooling?
A: No they don’t miss it. Maiden was in ps system for 4 years and she says the only thing she misses is seeing her friends more often (she stays in touch with 2 of them). Sassafras was only in ps for one year and she doesn’t miss it. She is a shy soul and often finds contentment in going her own way and doing her own thing- she was friendly with everyone but I don’t think she made any real “true” friends (which hurts this mama’s heart). As for enjoying homeschooling- yes they do. There are those days or those certain assignments that they don’t particularly enjoy but the overall experience is an enjoyment. They love being home and all the benefits/privileges that come with that. I have been amazed at how well my girls transitioned from public to home school and I know we are greatly blessed.
Q: How long do you plan on homeschooling?
A: As long as God allows. Usually this question leads into “Do you plan on homeschooling for high school too?” Again, if God allows. Right now I’d like to say yes, we will.

Do your children have gym/Phys. Ed?
Physical Education, yes. We are doing a health class. We also talk daily about nutrition. As far as running around for 30 min a day.......no, not in a structured way, but they do get physical work each any every day! We are a family of 5 and it takes 5 working people to keep this household running smoothly!!

Q: The BIG question: What about socialization?
What about it?
If someone were to ask me about 'socialization' I would ask them to engage any one of my 3 kids in an adult level conversation and then get back with me on the question of socialization.
I am not worried about it, my dh is not worried about it, my kids are not worried about it........so no one else should worry about it!

Q: Do your children miss public school? Do your children enjoy homeschooling?
No, my kids do not miss it one bit. They love being home schooled. My oldest went to school through 6th grade, my middle through 5th grade and my baby through 3rd grade. I have asked them if they would like to go back and I get a big resounding NO NO NO!!!

Q: How long do you plan on homeschooling?
Scripture is clear.
We will home educate until they leave this home and join their husbands and wife.

These are such good questions!!

My brother and sister-in-law in Portage began homeschooling their daughters while they were in high school, wishing they had begun earlier. One girl now attends Cedarville Christian College (or is it University?) in Ohio and the other is a high school junior. The girls have been active in church and have never missed the high school "socialization". ......Blessings from the Big Sky Country..........Denise (prairiemom)

My kids have plenty of physical education. Right now they are in baseball and softball. Then after schooling is done they play outside depending on the weather. They are in cub scouts and 4-h, ball and around other kids and adults. They have plenty of friends. They are very happy with homeschooling. They might miss some things about public school, but they prefer home. I hope to school them as long as I can.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
