Answering some HS questions

Inquiring minds want to know:
Q: Do your kids get snow days?
A: No. Side note: we still do school but if it's great packing snow they play outside first for awhile then do school.
Q: Do the kids get sick days?
A: Yes, if they are really sick, they don't do school that day. However, if it's just the sniffles- I just place a box of Kleenex on the table and we keep going! I have actually found with Maiden, that she gets her schooling done faster and with less fuss when she's a bit under the weather and curled up on the couch with a fuzzy blanket and cup of Sprite. Must be all that extra attention and "fluff".
Q: Do your kids get days off?
A: Hmm. This is a tough one. We school at home 4 days a week with the 5th day being our homeschool group meeting day. I have found our homeschooling lifestyle to be that every day is a school day- whether we are "doing" school or not; we just keep learning in all we do. We do schedule fun, silly days- like celebrating Dr. Suess or Talk Like A Pirate Day or School in our Jammies Day or Backwards Day. We also go on many fun field trips- which count as school but are so fun you don't know you are "doing" school.
Q: Do your kids get Spring Break?
A: Not a full 5 days, but we will be taking Maundy Thursday and Good Friday off from our regular schooling. We will be studying the Holy Week together.
Q: Do you school year round?
A: Well, these are yes/no questions but I don't have yes/no answers. We do a full school schedule for 180 days but as I said before the learning doesn't stop. We continue with spelling and math throughout the summer just at a slower pace and we also do a short 4 week unit study each summer. This year the girls are trying to decide if they want to do a gardening study or pirates- or both!
Q: Do you grade them? Do you test them?
A: Since this is my first year and I'm still "learning" how to do it all- I have not given out specific A, B, C grades except in math. I do keep records and chart their progress. So I'd have to say we do progress reports- such as "satisfactory, improving or unsatisfactory" in all subjects. They have math tests every 10 lessons and we test in spelling but other than that- we don't test. I don't do a standardized test either. I am thinking of doing some type of test at the end of next year but right now am only in the beginning stages of looking into the different types of testing available. [Note: The state of
Michigan does not require testing for homeschoolers]
More Q and A to come . . . .

Do your kids get snow days?
Nope! Funny, my son plays hockey for the local public high school and the kids on his team are so interested in his home education. They ask him if he got a snow day (because they did) and when he says "no" they give the big "ooooooo"! Then he is quick to remind them "Yeah, but in the nice weather, I am done with my "school day" by 10 am and am outside the rest of the day!!" They then give the big "mmmmmmm"!!

Do the kids get sick days?
Sure they do! But since we have been homeschooling, the kids just don't get "sick"......Blessing!!!

Do your kids get days off?
Sure they do!! We 'schedule' out school year much like PS. Our days off are days off with a purpose, but days off all the same!!

Do your kids get Spring Break?
Not really. Again, we take days off for a purpose...not just to be taking "days off".

Do you school year round?
We are a very much school at home type! We hit the books August 1 - May 31. June and July we enjoy the freedom of summer. Learning is learning....but we don't do 'structured' book learning June and July!

Do you grade them? Do you test them?
Yes, I have to. My son plays hockey for the local high school, and I have to report grades. This is to make sure he is meeting the schools 'grade standards'. The hockey league also gives out awards to the seniors who keep their grades up and fair well on the SAT and ACT exams.
My kids are college bound, so I keep records. They keep lab books.........whatever a college may need to admit them, I keep that kind of record.
As far as A,B,C.........we do not move to the next concept until we can achieve a "B" grade or better. The object here is to 'learn' not just 'move to the next grade'!!
I love homeschooling!! Great Questions!!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
