Home Sweet Simple Home

I want to know . . . . .

What will you (if anything) be doing for Valentine’s Day? I was wondering if homesteaders “do” Valentine’s Day differently and if anyone had any really cool idea/thoughts/stuff to share.

We make it a family day (after all we all love each other). Since my DDs are still in public school and my DH gets up @ 4:30 am (did I mention IÂ’m not a morning person?) breakfast wonÂ’t be a big production. In fact- IÂ’m thinking of doing something totally crazy- IÂ’m thinking of cutting brownies into heart shapes, topping them with strawberries & a bit of whip cream and serving that with a glass of pink milk to my DDs for breakfast. WonÂ’t they be surprised?! Dessert for breakfast! Yippee. In fact, I think I might just eat the same thing! He he.

IÂ’m already planning on sticking love notes in everyoneÂ’s lunches and a little something special for dessert (yep- another heart shaped brownie.) When my DDs come home from school is when IÂ’ll give them their little Valentine bags. Each bag has a Valentine book, a special Valentine button bracelet (IÂ’m working on making them!) a couple homemade chocolate truffles and the little Valentine 10 things I Love About You scrapbook I mentioned in a previous post. For my 23 mo old DS IÂ’ve got a couple of little books, a snack and a Thomas the Tank Engine (he just loves Thomas!). For my hubby- well, IÂ’m still working on that one! I know IÂ’m going to give him some cherry BBQ sauce because DS dropped DaddyÂ’s 32 oz. jar (with only a few tbsp. missing) on the kitchen floor and it exploded a few weeks back. My DH also loves green olives and oysters (2 things I abhor) so IÂ’ll probably buy him a little container of each since he only gets them a few times a year (usually just on Christmas & his birthday). Of course IÂ’ll give him a mushy little note too. Last year I wrote him a wonderful letter after reading Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs.

We donÂ’t do flowers and chocolates here on V-day; too costly. Mostly my DH sees it as a Hallmark Holiday meant to suck the life out of our pocketbook so we try to keep it low key and as homemade as possible (is that a homesteader outlook or what!?!).

In the evening we will all gather @ the table and fill in paper hearts with the things we love and either hang them on our “tree” or place them in a special scrapbook. We’ll read 1 Corinthians 13 and discuss ways we can better show our love for each other.

We also plan to have a special dinner (here’s where I go all out!) grilled steak, greens salad, lobster chunks, dirty mashed potatoes, h’made bread for DH and I- mac & cheese and hotdogs for the kiddos (their request). A dreamy Valentine chocolate cake for dessert. We’ll decorate the table with my prettiest lace table cloth and our very best dishes, my Great Gram’s silver and special Valentine cloth napkins as well as the goblets from our wedding for DH and I and little plastic “goblets” for the kids.

I think weÂ’ll finish out then by cleaning up together and reading our new Valentine books.

What are you going to do?

We've agreed not to do anything for each other this year. In year's past we've simply done cards - we don't get into consumerism at all at any holiday and try to make this one no different. Instead we focus on loving each other every day of the year. I may make some heart shaped pancakes for breakfast but otherwise, nothing different beyond simply saying "Happy Valentine's Day" to each other.

Not a Hallmark family! Te He

We will not be doing anything different than what we did on January 12th. It's just another day for us!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
