Works for Me Today

11:15 AM, 2006-Dec-6 .. Posted in Works for Me .. 1 comments .. Link

I am re-posting this entry from last week for 2 reasons- Today is St. Nicholas Day and I want to join in Works for Me Wednesday again (I am finding it to be a ton of fun). So check in the Shannon for other Works for Me tips after enjoying mine!

Originally posted Nov. 28th: I decided that we would read a different Christmas book last night and set aside St. Nicholas the Real Story of the Christmas Legend for next Wednesday, which is December 6th- St. Nicholas Day.
And I am developing a beautiful plan to go along with it. You see- we have our very own wooden shoes- passed down to me from my grandparents. In fact- our wooden shoes are filled with candy on Christmas Eve instead of our stockings. So on the Eve of St. Nicholas Day the children will set their wooden shoes out at their doorways and wake to find them filled with chocolate coins the next morning.
We will start the day with a special breakfast: Amish Sugar Cookies and Eggnog (plus some fresh fruit- gotta combat the sugar!). Then we will read the story and talk together about what we can do to help others. We'll start by going thru our toys and choosing some to give away. We'll spend some time sprucing/cleaning them up and then take them to our local free store. After that we will go to a local dollar store and each purchase items (from our own money) to fill Crisis Care Kits (A Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Project- kits given to people- especially children after disasters and such).
Come afternoon and evening: I believe we'll spend some more time working on our own homemade gift projects and have a very special family meal (complete with the good china and candles) in the evening.
Mr. Steady and I will also use this day to reinforce that while St. Nicholas was a real person there is no real Santa Claus. We want them to remember this man for the good that he did and how he served the Lord- not as a man who knows when kids are good or bad and can go around the world in one night (I am not for giving God-like attributes to a fictional character.)

St. Nicholas

I was wondering when St. Nicholas day was! I wanted to "celebrate" as well. I guess there's no time to plan like you did, but I do have some books and videos on the Real St. Nicholas we could watch today.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
