Home Sweet Simple Home

Tis the Season

I love how we are creeping into a season of slowing down. Whoa, did I just say slowing down? Perhaps not for most of the world-at-large, but it is so for us.
The garden is put to sleep and the outdoor maintenance chores are finished. The pantry is stocked. We are all prepped for winter. Soon the snow will cover the ground.
Since we don’t have animals (except the cat and I’m pretty sure he thinks he’s one of us) on our homestead things slooooowww way down here. Winter is the time for snuggling in, hot cocoa, family movie nites, family game nites. The hectic pattern of spring planting, kids sports, summer upkeep, school starting and fall harvest is past and now we “enjoy the fruits of our labors”.
I know Christmas is coming and that may be hectic but not here, anymore. We have taken the slow down and savor aspect of the season to heart. Because of the extra activities of the season we work to limit our family to one extra activity a week.
~We set aside a nite to pour hot cocoa in the thermos and put cookies in a basket and make sure the kids are in their warm p.j.s and go out driving around looking at Christmas lights. We ooooh and ahhhh and also talk about Jesus being the Light of the World and how we are called to spread his Light.
~We attend the Tree Trimming Party at our church- helping decorate for Christmas. We go Christmas caroling with our church family.
~We attend an area Christmas parade.
~We plan on inviting friends over to watch an old Christmas Classic.
~Going to Gramma’s (my parents) to make and decorate Amish sugar cookies for Christmas
~Christmas Eve Eve mid-morning spent with my Mama making the traditional Candy Cane Coffee Cakes for our families for Christmas Breakfast
~Christmas Eve services at church (It’s Sunday that’s a morning service and special evening service @ 10 pm)
~Christmas Eve with Mr. Steady’s family
~Christmas Day with my family at our house! (all 22+ of them)
~This year we are also hoping to attend a live Nativity in a neighboring town too.
But that is pretty much the extent of the craziness.
Our homeschooling will center on Advent. Normal science studies will be put on hold while we cook and make crafts.
We’re pulling out all our Christmas music and DVDs and have set the car radio to a station that plays Christmas music 24/7.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
