Sock--a-rooni

Perhaps you have noticed that here on our homestead we like to give our food wacky names like Polka Dots, Salmagundi and Sock-a-rooni. I like to think it adds to the fun of a meal. Anyhoo- I just knew someone would ask what Sock-a-rooni was (cause its such a fun name!). I have to say that its not nearly as fun as salmagundi or Polka Dots- cause I didn't totally make it up.
Sock-a-rooni is actually the name of a sauce from Newman's Own. The front of the jar states "Sockarooni- peppers, spices & the whole shebang!" So I can't say I coined the name but boy is it sure a fun one!
So here's what I do with that jar of sauce (which by the way- isn't way spicy- just a tad): I brown turkey sausage and add the jar of sauce and let it simmer awhile (adding perhaps a bit of garlic and oregano and a handful of sliced mushroom to the mix). While its simmering I am cooking rainbow rotini (noodles made from veggies- trying to sneak those veggies in for DS2). After the rotini is drained I mix it with the sauce- and Voila! Dinner! [add the garlic bread and a green salad and you've got a full meal!]
I only purchase Newman's Own Sockarooni when it's on special because it is way more expensive than store brand spaghetti sauce. I have gotten it as a buy-one-get-one free and as a buy-one-get-one-half-off. The jar I have in the pantry is the latter. The cost of a jar is $2.59 (buy one @ 2.59 + get one half off @ 1.30=3.89/2 jars=1.95 per jar). I bought the rotini as a BOGO (buy one get one) so I got 2 boxes for 89 cents making it 45 cents per box. The turkey sausage (1 lb) was from a little local store- for 99 cents.
Okay- you still following me?
Sockarooni 1.95
Rotini noodles .45
Turkey sausage .99
Total cost for Sock-a-rooni $3.39
The garlic bread is homemade and the salad is a deal from Sams (under $3 for 3 lbs of romaine- so both of those total around a $1 for the evening) so there you have it- a meal for a young family of 5 for under $5.
We will end up with enough leftovers for my DH to take in his lunch for at least 2 meals and still have some for our leftover smorgasbord on Saturday.

I had a feeling that that's what it was! I think every family has a sauce, noodle and meat dish. When I was growing up, my mother called hers "hishy-hash." My hubby's mother called hers "slumgullion." The first time I told my hubby I was making "hishy-hash" for dinner, he about fell over. "What is THAT?!?!" he asked. When I explained, he said we needed to compromise on the name; ergo, "gulleyhash" in our household.

Love your blog!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
