If you read my weekly menus- I’ve been asked “What is Salmagundi?” I was hoping someone would ask that! Thanks KSC!
Salmagundi is a recipe my mother found in a very old cookbook at the little cabin we visit some summers in
Northern Wisconsin. The cabin is owned by friends of the family and my family has been going there since my father was a child. It is a wonderful cabin memory for us and I make it because it’s good but more for the nostalgia. I also love it because it has such a strange name- my family has another name for it too- Slop. Yep, you read that right. Grew up on a pig farm and that’s kind of what it looks like sittin’ in your bowl at the table . . . . . the name slop has never deterred us from eating it either.

Salmagundi

1 lb. hamburger

2-3 Tbsp flour

salt & pepper to taste

1 can Vegetable Soup

1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup

½ soup can of milk

Brown meat, sprinkle with flour, salt & pepper. Add soups and milk, mix well. Cook on top of stove @ med. heat until heated thru [or in casserole dish for 30 min. @ 350 degrees].

Serve over mashed potatoes.

This dish costs me $2.65 to make.

This dish reminds me of fall too- my mama often made it in the fall. The leaves are beginning to turn colors and swirl down to the ground now. We are tracking them in the house . . . .

Hmmm...very interesting concoction! I'm trying to imagine how those two soups taste together...but I can't!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD12- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD9- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added sweet flavor to our family.

DS5- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He's the little man and best helper around! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
