Gnats

1:09 PM, 2006-Jul-19 .. Posted in Homekeeping .. 4 comments .. Link

I have gnats in my kitchen. I hate gnats. Due to an unfortunate Oops! on the part of someone in this house (who shall remain nameless but I can say IT WASN'T ME!) leaving a bucket of garbage sitting out on a hot day . . . . . the gnats didn't start out in my kitchen but on my back porch but have found the kitchen much more to their liking.
I need to know the best way to eradicate these little beasties. They drive me bonkers! Every time you go to the sink about 50 of them come wafting out. I don't want to spray chemicals in my kitchen. I tried a ripe piece of fruit in a baggie- left out all night to attract the gnats and then was suppose to just zip it closed and toss it in the morning. No gnats in the baggie- all in my sink. Tried the baggie in the sink- no gnats in the baggie- still liking my sink.
Sigh. Someone here has had to deal with this pesty problem. Come on and share your knowledge with me!

you need a good drain cleaner, something that will strip all the gunk off the insides of your pipes. that is what they are living off of and breeding in, your kitchen sink pipes...

i can\'t think of anything non chemical that will do that though...

About a drain cleaner... I buy something at Wal-Mart to clean my garbage disposal - here's the box, okay, it appears to be called "Disposer Care". It smells like lemon, you just pop the pouch into the disposer with warm water running, flip the switch on, and in about five minutes it is done. There are four pouches in the box, about $2.50 for the whole thing. For me, it lasts a few months, because I don't do it weekly - just when things get smelly. :-P

I don't know that this helps you, if you have a disposer it might... have you tried bleach? Maybe a cup of bleach in some hot water, put the plug in the sink, add bleach and water to the top of the sink & let it sit for an hour... then after you drain it, maybe a cup of bleach directly into the drain (no water) and let that sit for an hour. I'd try this in each side of the sink, if you have two sides.

I have no idea what I'm talking about here, just hypothesizing!!!!

Blessings!

Hair Dryer? What do you do- blow it into the sink or down the drain? What's it do? Cook 'em?
Interesting.
