Home Sweet Simple Home

A wonderful recipe

Here’s what I’m making for dinner tonight. I promised another price breakdown on one of my meals sometime- so here it is too.

One-Dish Chicken Bake

1 box (6 oz) stuffing mix for chicken

¼ cup butter, cut up

4 chicken breasts

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1/3 cup sour cream

Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Mix stuffing mix, butter and 1 ½ cups hot water in a large bowl; set aside. Arrange chicken in 9x13 baking dish. Mix soup and sour cream until blended- then spread evenly over chicken. Top chicken with stuffing mixture.

Bake for 30 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

Breakdown:

1 box stuffing mix $.99

butter $.19 (bought for $1.49/lb)

4 chicken breasts $2.68

can of soup $.43

sour cream $.33 ( bought 16 oz for $.99)

Total: $4.62

We will be feeding a family of 5 on this with leftovers for hubby's lunch tomorrow. This recipe is also quite easy to double. This is one of my favorite recipes I use when taking meals to someone- just add a bag of salad greens and they’re all set! Don’t forget to send dessert too!

OOHH that sounds good, I might just do that this week instead of our breakfast night, since I already have all the ingredients. Thanks for sharing that!

This does sound yummy. I assume you use boneless breasts. And I noticed the sour cream was 16 oz. for $.99 so your 1/3 cup should really ahve been half of the $.33. It's even less than you thought! not bad.

I saved even more money than I thought! Should have been $.17 for the sour cream- bringing my total to $4.46.
At my home we refer to this type of math as "fuzzy math". :o)
Oh- yes, it's boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

You know, it's doing things like this that make me realize how huge the mark up at restaurants is. it always irks me how much they charge compared to how much it costs me to do it at home. And then there's the nutritional aspect. A fruit cup at Wendy's is $4.00 but a cheeseburger is $.99. Go figure!

Just love checking in with you, Amy
