Reminiscing on my Country Childhood

What a gorgeous day. The only thing that I think could have made it better was if I had gotten a chance to hang the wash. I did the wash yesterday . . . . We've taken advantage of the day so far- spending time outside etc. DH just got back from taking the 3 kiddos bike riding.
Now that's one of the perks to living in town- nice paved streets with a slower speed limit. I grew up on a paved road in the country- a road that everyone drag raced on . . . . we weren't allowed out on it. Today the road in front of my parent's house is even more heavily trafficked and all the more dangerous.
I think back to all the fun things I did growing up and how my brother and I would spend all day every day outside from sun up to sun down . . . . Today we wouldn't allow our children to roam all over as we did. We use to hike back into the woods (@ least 1/2 a mile away from the house) and build forts in downed trees only a few yards from the road.
I remember going to bed at night and having to shake my sheets because of all the dirt/sand I brought to bed with me. Bath nite was Saturday nite (for church). Mom didn't see the wasting of water if all we were going to do was go out and get dirty all over again the next day. Besides the sprinkler and trips to the local lake access took care of our hygiene just fine! LOL My mom said we must have looked like a bunch of hilly billy white trash when we'd go to the lake. We'd pack up for the day- bringing lunches and snacks and blankets and pillows (for nap time ya' know) and sand toys and water rings, plastic blow-up rafts etc and stay for hours and hours. There was a little stream next to the access and we'd build dams and hunt rocks and shells, minnows and little crawfish. Often times in early summer we'd end up with swimmer's itch and more often than not I'd get water in my ear and develop and ear infection. And I haven't even mentioned the sunburns.
I remember the smell of my skin- lake water and sunscreen. I can almost smell it now as I remember . . . .

Ahh...thanks for bringing back the memories. :-) We've got the racers are our road now too, and it makes it difficult to take our walks to the creek. There is no way I'd ever let the children walk or ride their bikes out there! Crazy people! :-)
Thanks for you comment about Naomi. I just love your enthusiasm. :-) Oh, and you were visitor #777 to my blog. Now that has to be a good thing! :-)

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
