~Greetings from our PA mountain homestead~

Try some nourishing goat milk soap for your winter skin, and pick up a few extra to give as gifts for your friends and family!

Some of you were wondering where I have been...

Things have been busy here, and we are enjoying some unseasonably mild weather this week-very nice for deer season opening. Snow is in the forecast for Friday, and we are looking forward to that as well. I have been doing a bit of Christmas shopping and packaging soaps, now that my business is picking up.

One of our dairy goats has suddenly surprised us with signs that she is about to have kids! This has been interesting and exciting, and I had to read up on kidding since I wasn't prepared quite yet. I am thinking maybe in the next week or so she will have them. She has always had twins before she became ours. This will be our first kidding experience. Now we will have a freshened doe and our own milk through the winter. I thought we would have to go back to buying from our neighbors (Jersey cows) for a couple of months while our recently bred milking does were drying off. So that is an added bonus. Most likely the kids will be meat goats as the buck was a Boer, so they will be dam raised and either go to auction, or, if we can do it, we will butcher them when the time comes. I am afraid they will be pets as all of our children will love them to death, being our first "kids" and all. ;)

How exciting! I have a question for you... is it supposed to be harder having kids at this time of year? I mean does the cold weather make it harder for the kids? Just curious. I've missed you....

This is our first experience with goats kidding, but I have been told that the cold (unless it is extreme) is not too much for the kids. The most important thing is to keep them out of drafts. This week would be perfect for kidding as it has been very mild- in the 50's during the day and 30's at night. I am expecting she might have the kids when the weather turns cold this weekend, but it should still be fine as long as she is in her stable. :) I can't wait to post some pictures of the new arrivals!
