HIGHLAND CATTLE UPDATE

We are considering the use of our 25 acres and would like to buy a few steers this spring, but haven't yet decided on a breed.  We have a barn to shelter them and plenty of pasture, as well as a place to start a pond.   Does anyone have any comments  about or experience with Scottish highlander cattle that you could share with us? We would probably raise them for market and may use just one for ourselves, venison being our preferred meat. I guess the growing time and temperament would be two issues.  Any info appreciated!

 Great source of information received in the mail by request. Email highlandcattle@centurytel.net. Looks like highland cattle may be the way to go for us. They are extrmely hardy, can survive on poor pastures, and like to browse on woody vegetation; they are capable of clearing out a woodlot. Theyhave no need to assist with calving, and do exceptionally well with crossing, especially with Herefords.  They are long lived and produce calves with ages of 23 years. The beef is low in fat and cholesterol. These docile, hardy animals do not require a barn and are ideal for a small farm or even a pet!  There is a lot of useful information about keeping these cattle available from the Heartland Highland Cattle Assoc. in Tunas, MO. (email address given above) According to this publication, there is a sound, dependable growing market for cows and heifers, sold for breeding stock. The steer/beef market is still growing with many breeders selling the meat from their farm rather than taking their steers to the local sale barn. Highland beef is being sold as a gourmet, healthy, lean, good tasting beef at higher than market prices.

We have been in contact with some farms who have highlands to sell, as well as a local man who can supply us with a hereford for crossing. We plan to get the fencing and water supply ready this spring so we can start our own cattle business.
