Lye for soap making

I would like to know the deal on obtaining lye for making soap...I understand it is getting harder to come by these days and that to order it and have it shipped there is a $20. haz-mat fee. Can anyone give me any more information on this? I would like to experiment with making some goat's milk soap this summer, and haven't been able to locate some economically priced lye. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

have a gander at my posts on soap-making - it was soooo frustrating. what I finally did was:
www.lowes.com
look up the product name Roebic Crystal Drain Cleaner .
it comes up nicely. Now comes the tricky part: there is a link that allows you to shelf check the inventory of your local Lowes. this is important because if you call or visit the store, you have to have their item number - they cannot look it up by brand name (which, if I can do it online, is REALLY poor planning on thier part!)
Once you have located a store in your area that carries it, call that store and give them the item number and have them bring it to the customer service desk for you. There are 4 Lowes in my area, and only one carries it. and it was not the biggest.

is at your local hardware store-that is where we have been getting ours, as our Lowe's didn't have it after all
