Check this out for cheap winter chicken feed!

Do you feel like you are always making a run for expensive chicken feed? Especially during the winter months when they need more and there aren't greens and insects to supplement their diet. Here is something new to try!

In reading I found this resource for Red Mangle Beet seeds which grow very large (15 lb.) beets which are said to be an excellent supplement to/replacement for chicken feed in the winter. They store well and if you skewer them down with a nail the chickens will peck at them until they are gone. Crimson outer skin; rosy white flesh. 110 days. I plan on giving them a try! I wonder if this would be good for goats too, as you can cut up turnips, potatoes, and carrots for them in winter. I will just have to find out!

for such a great tip. I always feel bad giving them just feed & veggies from the sore for them gets a bit much. I will be trying the beets this year- Thanks again!

It's an old feed .... farmers fed beets and turnips to their animals in the winter - in replacement or in addition to grains. Cut up into bite sized pieces. You might have to gradually introduce your goats to them, but they should like them -- they are pretty sweet. Great idea.
