I've been doing lots of thinking...

About the homesteading and family vision thing today, but I am not sure I am ready to enter any contests yet! I really appreciated Carla's blog (sorry, I don't know how to create links yet-any help appreciated); I also went over and read The Deliberate Agregarian. I have not fully analyzed all the reasons for why I do what I do. My upbringing has a lot to do with it, and I just do what I believe is right or what is best for me and my family. I enjoy this way of life and am interested in learning some new skills and ways to utilize our resources. Although our lives are busy and plans abound, we have been shifting to making life simpler and more self-sufficient these past few years. I can teach my children at home and see them enjoy learning how to do new things. With that I have hopes that they will remember to pass it along to their children. And in seeking to build a better life for them, I am training them to build their own lives; the value of responsibility, working hard, and taking initiative. And there IS something fulfilling about making and doing things on your own, even if it involves a lot of time and energy. The rewards (and benefits) outweigh those of spending money on things already made and shipped to stores. There isn't much satisfaction in going to the store and buying all you need there when you can organically grow and preserve your own food, bake your own bread, handcraft goods for your home and family, work the earth, and care for your own livestock-the list goes on. The homesteading way of life is best for us and makes life more meaningful. I think that is the way God meant it to be! I think our family vision is still in the process of being formed and will continue to take shape as our children enter their teen years. We want to pass on the Christian heritage and the way of life, the most important thing being discipling them to know God and follow Christ's example. May He bless us all in that endeavor.
